Cole ^-International Lead Zinc Research Organization SUBJECT: rences on Childhood Lead Poisoning We have looked carefully at the publication on the highlights of the mid-West and Eastern conferences on childhood lead poisoning and aside from the one reference to the lead-gasoline issue by Dr. Mack, this would appear to be a valuable and helpful background piece. We feel the one reference by Dr. Mack is pretty well offset by the Tepper material and the fact that more than 30 scientists and other experts discuss this problem and apparently did not find the lead-gasoline issue worth mentioning. To maintain our position of aiding in any way we can the effort to reduce childhood lead poisoning, we would suggest that the booklet be distributed as background information to environmental writers and science writers and perhaps to a selected list of legislators who have shown an interest in the lead poisoning problem. This could be accompanied by a cover letter signed by Jerry Cole. To accomplish this we would need 500 copies of the booklet. A draft note to science writers is attached. Thompson LIA-75605 Draft Note to Science Writers -^T/Hr/73 The federal government, communities across the nation and industrial groups are conducting a strong effort to combat the problem of childhood lead poisoning which is caused when children eat old, chipped and flaking lead-based paints which were applied to the interior of dwellings many years ago. In an effort to shed more light on the problem and encourage greater action two conferences on childhood lead poisoning were held recently under the auspices of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Chicago and Wilmington, Delaware. The Lead Industries Association, which participated in the conferences, has published edited proceedings of the two meetings and is making them available to physicians and public health workers as part of a continuing LIA program to help in reducing childhood lead poisoning. We have enclosed a copy in the belief that it may be valuable to those of you who are currently working on stories con cerning this topic or as a reference to have for your files.
