EQUIPMENT: i i 1. T&N Classifier equipped with two sets of 1;" diameter Endecott sieve i discs as follows: 7 mesh B.S.S. lU mesh B.S.S, 25 mesh B.S.S. 50 mesh Commercial Also one 8" diameter 200 mesh B.S.S,sieve 2. Drying oven working at 100 + 5C. SAMPLE PREPARATION: 1. The specimens are prepared from the bulk laboratory sample by the pro cedure described in Section "Sampling and Sample Preparation". 2. The specimens taken in accordance with the sampling procedure are placed in an oven at 110 5C. for five minutes, colled for thirty minutes in a partly-closed container. From this sample the test sample is selected and weighed to 2 0.005 gm. TEST METHOD: 1. Die fiber obtained as above, weighing 2 + 0.005 gn is soaked in U00 cc of water in a 500 cc beaker, for a minimum period of four minutes, then stirred continuously by hand with a glass rod for a further period of one minute. 2. The correct quantity of water (60 gal/hli) is run through the classifier and care is exercised to ensure that there are no leaks as a result of inadequate clamping of the sieves. 3. The motor is turned on and the contents of the beaker are slowly added to the first (top) sieving unit, taking care as this is done to prevent water overflowing. All residue is washed out from the beaker with a small amount of clean water (e.g. from a plastic wash-bottle) into the IPREPARED SYi APPROVED BY: XEROi copy! r* 7tt :frVj XERCM COPY H' CTD010199 fO*M P27 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS CERTAIN-TEED PRODUCTS CORPORATION ASBESTOS CEMENT PIPE NUMBER: m -12 SUPERSEDES: APPLICABLE TO: CLASSIFICATION: PAGE 2 DATE OF ISSUE: Jan. 18. 1965 DESCRIPTION: FIBER LENGTH AND DUST CONTENT - T&N CPC TEST METHOD T&N CLASSIFIER DETERMINATION OF DISTRIBUTION AND -200 MESH DUST CONTENT OF ASBESTOS FIBER.___________________________________________ first sieving unit. The measured time of operation for the test starts after all fiber has been poured into top sieve. U. I i If necessary, dean the 200 mesh screen gently with a rubber-tipped rod. If the head of water in the fourth unit (containing the 50 mesh screen) starts to increase, clear the screen with the soft rubber-tipped rod provided. Clear immediately any fiber which lodges in the origices of any of the sieving units, with the hook provided to prevent the water level in the unit from rising unduly. 5. After five minutes stop the flow of water and, when the flow has ceased from the respective units, wash down any fiber remaining on the walls of the cylindrical vessels on to the sieves, using a plastic wash bottle. 6. Remove the 7, lU, 25 and 50 mesh sieve discs from the units, first ensuring that any fiber remaining in the conical depression in a given sieve holder is washed down on to the succeeding sieve. 7. Carefully wash into a beaker the fiber retained by the 8" diameter 200 mesh sieve and filter to obtain the +200 fraction. 8. Dry the fiber fractions retained on the 7, lU, 25, 50 and 200 mesh sieve discs for a minimum period of twenty minutes at 110 + 5C. 9. After drying, cool the fractions and sieves for a minimum period of thirty minutes in a partly closed contained and weigh. Subtract the tare weight of the respective sieve discs, previously determined, from the gross weights. CALCULATIONS: 1. The weight of fiber in each fraction is expressed as a percentage of the original weight of specimen, to 0.5 per cent. The mean of the duplicate classifications are reported to the nearest 1.0 per cent. 2. The dust content is defined as that fraction of the specimen which, passing through the 200 mesh B.S.S. sieve, is the difference between the weight of fiber collected and the original weight of the specimen. The dust content is calculated by substracting the total weight of the fiber recovered, from the weight of the complete specimen tested (2 gm) and express as a percentage of the complete specimen to the nearest half per cent.
