Winer (Code 6101E), it has been brought to our attention that in Ammendment-3 of M1L-I-278ID, Grade II, `Class C and Grade III, Class F i.e. all fibrous types of pipe insulation have been deleted. The reason given by Mr. Winer was that if was thought that all fiberous types of pipe insulation contain asbestos. Through this letter we would like to inform you that Eagle-Picher has introduced EFI7HERM-1200 - a molded pipe insulation which is ICC* asbestos free and it is made from high temperature mineral fiber and meets all requirements of Class C and F of KIL-I-2781D. c: We have presented samples of EPIiHEBM-1200 to various shipyards (such as Newport News, Long Beach, etc.) and considerable interests have been shown by them as it is not only asbestos free but it has h also all desireable properties required by them. They have requested that we apply for 2781 qualification tests as soon as possible so that upon approval they may use EPITEERM-1200 in various shipyards. In addition to being asbestos free, unlike compound type of pipe insulation (such as Grace I, Class C,Grade II, Class D, Grade III, Class e), the ZPITEERM-1200 does not contain sc called hazardous free crystalline rilica to the best of our knowledge airborne dust from EIPTHLRN-120n is not considered hazardous. So we recommend that the high temperature fibrous types of pipe insulations that have been deleted .-re reinstated with a possible foot note that all pipe insulation specified in this spec will not contain asbestos and poss free rilica.
