In Death Of BY DAN BAUM It was not encephalitis (sleep ing sickness) that killed 23- month-old David Marler, son of Richard and Barbara Marler, Kirby Road, Harrison, on Sep tember 25. The office of the coroner reported the child died from lead poisoning. . David died at Children's Hos pital where attendants tried for more than an hour to save him. At the time there was "a strong possibility" that his death was caused by sleeping sickness. A few days before the child was taken to the hospital his parents noticed "a marked loss of appetite and sleepiness." The boy's physician said that the child had been chewing on the paint of his crib. His par ents, noticing it, covered the crib with plastic. Then the child went to the living room were five window ledges were painted. There was evidence that the child had been chew ing on them. ., "Doctors and school officials have been trying to put across the idea to parents of the danger of lead poisoning. Chil dren must be carefully watched," the family doctor said., w+ Marler Infant i K r 00 4 0 1 tf
