MURPHY Soparintandant ZU7 Risk #31-267 Attn: Lewis Evans- Safety Director Dear Mr. Evans: Enclosed are the results of the bulk rafter sample I collected during a survey on February 25* 1975* The analyses are as follows: (a) 5-102 of the total material is fibrous, the. size range of asbestos, (b) No free silica found. (c) Iron oxide, 13-47% of total sample. (d) Cadmium oxide 0.001K of total sample. (e) Lead oxide, 0.222 of total sample. (f) The sample was found to be basic in nature with a pH of 9a* (g) Other metals present; manganese, a medium content found; copper; a heavy content found; zinc, a medium content found. Based on the findings of the bulk sample, I would suggest that when the electricians or other employees are working in the rafter area, that the area where employees are working should be thoroughly cleaned. The accumulation should be removed by a vacuum system, sweeping or blowing of the dust should be avoided, to prevent dispersion. The delay in furnishing you the results is attributable to an analytical backlog. If we can be of assistance to you at a later date, feel free to contact the Division. MURPHr Sopattntandsnt General Motors Corporation 200 Georgesville Road Columbus, Ohio 43228 Attention: Lewis Evans - Safety Director 647 Risk # SI 267 On February 25, 1975, a survey was conducted at the plant for sulfuric acid at the battery charging operation and a bulk rafter sample was taken to determine what the constituents were that were alledgely af fecting electricians working on systems above ground. The following persons were contacted: Lewis Evans - Safety Director Herbert Lutz - Safety Engineer Halvor Christenson - Engineer ' ; The sample taken for sulfuric acid using an MSA personal sampling pump plus a HA mixed cellulose ester filter (.45 micron). The ana lytical method used to obtain the result was tilration for sulfates. The results of the sulfuric acid survey.is listed in the accompanying Table No. 1. Therein are listed operation, current Threshold Limit Values (TLV's) and results. Based on the findings of the sulfuric acid survey, no current TLV's were exceeded. Therefore no recommendations will be given at this time, except to maintain the operation such as to keep the atmospheric concentration to the level found at the time of this inspection. At present, I have still not received the analysis of the bulk rafter sample. When the results are in hand, an additional report will be sent.
