Subject: PRICE ADVANCE
I am attaching a copy of the notice which will bo mailod from Cleveland the
lattor part of this week in time-to reach all S-W Authorized Dealers Monday
morning, September 23rd. Thore is littlo I can add to the explanation for
the increase given our dealers other than the fact that a virtual fomino
exists today on China Wood Oil and the paint industry will have to get along
until next Spring with what China Wood Oil the manufacturers have on hand plus
the supply in the hands of brokers, all of which has boon sold for futuro de
livery*

For two or three months the China Wood Oil market has steadily rison duo to & shortage in this country and the infrequency of shipments from China, but it was not until very recently that the brokers of this commodity and tho paint grinders awakened to the fact that thoro just wasn't any more China Wood Oil to bo had at any price, and that until early next Spring we would have to get along with what wo had on hand or had committed for*
China Wood Oil is used in substantial quantities in all but one or two itoms shown on tho attached list (they are being advanced for other reasons). For two or three months wo have been manufacturing these particular linos with high priced China Wood Oil and for that reason it is nocessary for us to put those advances into effect immediately - wo cannot afford to bill any customers, regardless of their size and importance, at the old prices.
With this bulletin wo are sending you mimeographed prico lists of all tho lines effected so that you con begin billing Monday, September 23rd, on the now basis. As tho notice says, the advanced prices are effective on that date and all or ders received on and aftor tho 23rd must bo so billed* Any ordors that are in the house, oithor unshipped or shippod, but not billed prior to Monday morning, may bo billed at tho old pricos. Managers will see that thoso instructions are cleaily understood by all concerned and closely followed.
