MONDAY, MAY 22, 19&1 HEW YORK, MAY 22, 1961 - Hational Lead Company today began construction of a new multimillion dollar research center in East Windsor Township, near Hightstovm, Hew Jersey. Community leaders and officers and directors of National Lead Company attended the ground breaking ceremony at which company president Joseph A. Martino presided. Located on a 250 acre site adjacent to the New Jersey Turnpike, the research center will cemprise separate units designed to provide specialized facilities for research and development work for the company's major divisions. National Lead Company, a leading producer of fabricated non-ferrous metals, chemicals, paints, pigments, alloys, bearings, die castings, oil well drilling muds, refractories and other products for industry, has 90 plants and mines and 16 research and development laboratories located throughout the country, as well as operations in 13 foreign countries. Construction of the first unit of National Lead Company Research Center is scheduled for completion in the summer of 1962. The building will contain 87,000 square feet of laboratory, office and service space. There are four wings which will be devoted to research and development in the fields of non-ferrous metals, paints and pigments, lead chemicals, plastics and resins. The building will also Include a cafeteria and a library, as well as service and storage facilities. In breaking ground for the center, Joseph A. Martino stated: "Rational Lead Company was one of the first companies in the country to put research on the payroll. The company established its first research laboratory at Brooklyn in 1891 and in the intervening years has actively supported an expanding research and development program. At the beginning of this century we manufactured and sold about two dozen items. Today we produce over 150 basic products and thousands of derivatives and our research programs have contributed substantially to this growth.
