As I mentioned to you by phone, Exxon is probably reluctant to participate for several reasons. One is that we have been studying this ever since 1965, the most recent review being in 1973. Another reason is that, at the present time, we are having a bit of a pro blem with one of our affiliate groups trying to reassign responsibilities and activities of the industrial hygiene personnel. Naturally, this involves the refineries where we have Medical Department staffs. I do not think you would want one of our refineries to participate in this study where there is no permanent medical staff. Until we get this industrial hygiene allocation problem settled, I would not like to commit myself. If you do have participation from five different company refineries, I would say just go ahead without con sidering Exxon further. The date of your most recent letter is May 1. Since then it is possible that you have been very active in this project without my knowledge. This is the reason for the request for updating this file. You will recall that Exxon did not participate in the epidemiology study that was contracted to Tabershaw-Cooper Associates because of an objection that was raised by the Employee Relations Department. I understand the primary ob jection to that study was having outside people come into the refinery for the purpose of reviewing our personnel and/or medical records. These same objections may still prevail, although I have not checked since that time. I personally wish that Exxon had participated in the epidemiology study. It is a bit embarrassing for me to not have our own statistics included in this study, which now is about to be published and it appears to be favorable to our industry point of view.
