Mixtures are classified according to the predominant form. Use in paints is generally as suspending agents, flatting agents, and as film reinforcements to fill pores, enhance wearing properties, and generally strengthen films. The fibrous varieties possess superior suspending qualities and are generally used to hold the more heavy pigments in suspension. They further impart film toughness due to their bonding effect, and greatly decrease light reflectance of painted surfaces. Flake talcs impart protective properties and good hiding power, due to their micaceous nature. Granular talcs are free from abrasive matter. They have less influence on consistency than other forms. In general, talcs containing aluminum in quantities of two or three percent have a characteristic softness. Fibrous talcs usually contain four to six percent calcium oxide. However, if present as calcium carbonate, the structure tends to be crypto-crystalline. For comments on individual talcs, see page 62-3. 0007-PMC-000000338 Page 62-7 February 10, 1955 CLAYS (Hydrated Aluminum Silicates) China Clays (Kaolin) are very fine, do not swell in non-polar organic solvents and have low plasticity in water. 6205 Domestic China Clay is a fine clay with high consistency and good gloss. 6202 Water-washed Kaolin, similar to 620$ in particle size, consistency and gloss. Replacement with 62C9 is now encouraged. Bentonites and other clays based on montmorillonite have a high chemical ac tivity and are hydrophyllic. 6200 Gels with five to six percent Bentonite form water-oil emulsions. .6210 A product resulting from cation exchange reactions between organic ammonium-type base and bentonite. Use-is extensive as a puffing agent. Miscellaneous aluminum silicates. 62C10 Stained clay containing several percent iron oxide is used in metal primers. Varying iron content makes control of uniformity difficult. 62C3\ Prophyllites are hydrated aluminum silicates frequently classified 62C6' among the talcs since their performance is similar to that of flaky talcs. 0007-PMC-000000339
