National Laad Company 1600 Bast 21st Street Indianapolis, Indiana (46218) Dear Doctor Haggardt ws hava received (addressed to Dr. Kehoe) 10 samples of blood, about which there apparently has been no correspondence. These samples are not in duplicate, are obviously not in containers obtained from us and we have been given no information beyond the identification of the subjects. Unless sane special arrangements have been made with Dr. Kehoe we have to regard this as (from our viewpoint) irregular procedure, our require ments are (unless some other arrangements are made for some unusual reason)thatt (1) we agree to the acceptance of the requested analytical work. (See the reverse side of the enclosed identification and history sheet.) (2) Containers are used which are obtained from us. ^ (3) Blood samples are obtained in duplicate and that both blood and urine (if obtained) are collected strictly according to our recommendations. (4) The forms are filled in completely and legibly. X do not like to be peremtory about these matters but our efforts and yours may be not only ineffectual but may even lead to actual dis tortion of the true situation if our requirements are not satisfied. Please inform us of the purpose of the analytical work requested, the nature of the working environment and the condition of the subjects, and if you so choose request our equipment, we can in turn put the equip ment in your hands promptly. We will then have more confidence in absence of contamination, have a cross check on the blood saxaples and information which will allow for the more competent interpretation of analytical results. bI 2 . While no one item is more important than another, Z call your attention particularly to the information requested under "Treatment." While any and all medication should be known to us, it is of especial importance that any use of the chelating agents should be described fully, whether used therapeutically or prophylactically. The determination of the concentration in the blood alone or even (to a scanwhat lesser degree) in both the blood and urine during and for seme time after the use of these agents is useless for the evaluation of the true current state of the body burden of lead and the current exposure. A full set (three sheets) of Instructions and questionnaire is enclosed for your reference and information. The samples of blood are being held until X have a reply to this letter at which time Z shall probably continue to feel, as z do now, that it would be unwise to spend time on their analyses.
