INTER-COMPAHY AUO INTER- DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE TO: Distribution Below G. Ha'FitzGerald from: Quality Control - Shapes DATE: November 19, 1973 subject: Asbestos-Free Test Development Task Force Meeting: r-jtlay, 11/16/73 Present: PAP, MSW, GF, AS, PJ30, JCl-i, KT, GHF of previous week's tests. 1.1.0 Seal-On ring #491E (XS 1560A) - AS and JCI-1 ^ecl that the recipe is unacceptable. GF feels that this is the best recipe developed so far and should be pursued furt'her without modification, rather than lose two weeks in developing a new recipe. 1.1.1 Test run will be scheduled for 5 hours on Tuesday, 11/20, 7:30 a.m. No adjustments will be made in solids content, etc. until Manufacturing, Tooling and Engineering have had full opportunity to achieve acceptable forming. 1.2.0 24-hour supervision of pulping platform (EP 5465) to validate recipe from standpoint of dustiness and foaming. 1.2.1 Technical Department and Quality Control feel that the test did verify the viability of this recipe when properly made. 1.2.2 Manufacturing disagrees with this position for two reasons: (a) Due to shortage of RM, no PVAC resin was used during test and the RM 177A content was correspondingly Increased. (b) Manufacturing still had to add ammonium hydroxide to the holding tank to improve dewatering and correct "sink holes". 1.2.3 neither Q/C~nor the Technical Department were aware that such additions were necessary or made. 1.2.4 Next week, with the additional manning of pulping platforms, all recipe constituents will be accurately weighed under Manufacturing supervision and no ammonium hydroxide will be added. If forming problems are encountered, the Technical Department will be contacted immediately for technical assistance. 1.3.0 Corrugated machine PROFLEX (asbestos-free) recipe - Test was not run due to urgent customer-demands' for products being made on 'B'-and 'C* machines. 1775 Asbcsto:;-Fruc Teat; Development Task Force Meeting: 11/16/73 rage 2 Status of last week's Action Needed: All items requiring further action are incorporated in this week's Action Needed section with last week's date" 2.1 Use of ground FROFAX in EP 5465 was tested and found to be acceptable. 2.2 Q/C monitoring density and transverse strength (2 tests per shift) data agree with Technical Department specifications-- will continue this procedure. 3.0 Associated Items and Action Needed: MSW 3.1 Holding tank modification needs to be pursued. WJB 3.2 Dyeing of liquid UF resin not necessary if resin is purchased from Georgia Pacific or Borden Chemical. Production Control to determine why American Cyanamide was used as supplier for present shipment of liquid UF. The Technical Department did not approve American Cyanamide. 3.3 Testing program for 11/19 and 11/26: 3.3.1 - #49IE (XS 1560A) Tuesday, 11/20, 7:30 a.m. 3.3.2 - Corrugated board (EP 5465), B or C machine, week of 11/26. 3.3.3 - Corrugated board (PROFLEX asbestos-free), week of 11/26, B or C machine. 3.4 Tests on freezing of US and PVAC showed both materials freeze at 7 F. and readily return into solution with no damaging effects. 3.5 Use of aranonlua hydroxide - (See para. 1.2.4) MSW 3.6 (11/9) K-4 dewater modifications will be accomplished some time before 11/30. RTC 3.7 (11/9) K-4 dryer racks for #685 need to be checked for accuracy. ... . --- H' ' ' MSW 3.8 (11/9) RTC 3.9 (11/9) Supervise a run of asbestos-free Profax at Mt. Braddock, material to be sent to Cleveland in 300# drums. Recipe has been supplied by Technical Department. I Prepare costs on injection forming plates for Seal-On rings.
