Average for week of Grafts is as follows: Kaiser Engineers Subcontractors Foothill Electric 1,614 1,195 634 Total Crafts Working 5,493 KEN 003915 'JEEKLY FIELD ACTIVITY REPORT Week Ending October 3, 1967 GENERAL COMMENTS Our present electrical manpower of 725 men with an average absentism of 7 percent is sufficient to meet the requirements of Foothill on Project "6C0,, During the past week 500 Foothill electricians were employed in the Hpt Strip Mill and we are beginning this week to cut the manpower down in certain areas, and are placing these men on necessary work in the Slab Mil, Due to the increased manpower, we have been able to perform bridge crane wiring simul taneously on four units in the Soaking Pits and Hot Strip Kill, The other electrical subcontractors also have sufficient manpower at this time. Although we presently have the required number of Pipefitters on K3 payroll; we have, until the last few days, been short of Welders, The situation has been alleviated; however, with another compliment of Canadian Welders bringing our total to 115. It is our understanding through a Charleston, West Virginia Pipefitter on this job that the Union Carbide strike is about to be settled and that within a weeks time we will probably lose ICO men. Another week or two of their present manpower would have left very little grease piping to complete. Considerable progress has been n&de with these people, however, we believe that we can obtain 50 men from the Ford situation by Tuesday, October 10. Two problems occurred during this week that has delayed progress. The first was a faulty coil in the F3 finishing motor requiring the removal of the rotor and the replacement of the coil. The motor should be back on the line Monday, October 16, and would delay the testing of that unit by little over two weeks. In testing the furnace cooling water system from the pump house, excessive pressure was exerted on the water cooled lintels at the reheat furnaces and caused damage to the lintel box, the brickwork surrounding it, and damage resulted to refractories by water. It appears that at least two weeks will be required to repair the damage. Considerable progress has been made throughout Project "600" with improvement in seme areas of the Hot Strip Mill, 1 KEN 003916 -3 - VJ3EKIX FIELD ACTIVITY ESPOHT Vfaak Siding October 3, 1967 P50JECT PBOCTESS 1. HOT STRIP MILL lal E:cca-yatlon and Backfill: 3EO cubic yards cf excavation v.'as completed during the period for a total to date of 1,106,922 cubic yards. 1.2 Concrete: 135 cuixLc yards of ccacrcto was placed during the period for a total to date of 209,599 cubic yards. Concrete pours consisted of the skip hoist car puller foundations and electrical duct encasement at the Green Coil conveyor facility. Regaining concrete is estimated at 447 cubic yards at the Hot Strip Mill, 1.3 Structural and Miscellaneous Steel: Good progress was maintained during the period on miscellaneous steal in the Hot Strip Mill Area. During the period, progress was continual on the 8" handrail near column line 1. This work is scheduled to complete next period. Framing for all of the power operated roll up doors is now complete. Erection of the three slab transfer cars in the slab yard was completed during the period and elec trical progress on these cars is now underway. Erection was also con tinued on the two roll transfer cars. These cars are near completion except for remaining electrical work. Installation of floor grating in the pusher area continued during the period. 5 tons'are remaining to be installed. Leveling plates were installed for the slab reject car and the rails have been set in place. Grating and plate installation in the dcNncoilsr area was continued throughout the period. This installation is proceeding satisfactorily in support of mechanical installation. Progress also continued during the period in the roll shop on plate and grating installation at the work roll lay down area and the roil assembly area. These areas are now 90 complete. Ah average force of 80 men ispresently engaged in miscellaneous steel installation work and with con tinuation of this fcares during the next six weeks will almost complete the remaining 350 tens to be installed. 1.4 Roofing and Sjdingt The tenparaxy end wall in the boiler area south of boiler #3 is now 50Jf cosplets.. Installation of this end vail is sche duled to eoaplete in two weeks. / ,i 1.5 Heating sal Ventilating* During the period, aheetmatal work was con tinued on bag houses #10 through 13 Sheetmetal werk on bag house 5 and 15 is now complete. All bag house shertmstal work is. scheduled to complete next period. Electrical progress continued during the period on bag houses ffl, 2, 5, 14 and 15. Ccapletioa of remaining bag houses- is dependent on the amount of electrical progress maintained in these areas. Bag houses #1, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 14 are complete electrically. In the main mill aiaLe, all diffusers have been in stalled far the extractor director room, the R2 director roaa and the finishing mill director room. At the dorncoiler director room, installa tion of the piping and electrical work for the air conditioning unit was initiated during the period. The coil conveycr director room air ducts are no* complete aid insulated.. Ccmspleticn of this unit is expected in the near future. During the period, Kaiser forces worked on completion of the dorncoiler and fUrnace extractor pulpit air conditioners, thus completing all pulpit units along 2-line. 06 Mechanical: ELchleay continued throughout the period with an average work force of 75 men in the Hot Strip Mill. In the furnace area, in stallation of the #3 pusher unit was continued with completion sche duled for next period. Alignment of the remaining four motors at tables #9 through 12 was in progress. Clean up of bearing seals, oovsrs and aids guides at tables #3 through 7 is almost finished and intro duction of lube oil #4 to the bearings was started during the period. In the rougher area, remedial work was continued cn the edger drive adjustment mechanisms for E2, E3 and E4 edgers. During the testing of these mechanisms, it was noted that the drive motors drew excessive amperage. The mechanisms are being dismantled and the brass bearings and thrust washers cleaned and scraped to improve clearance and friction conditions. The extent of this rework is unknown at this time; however, project engineering Is investigating this problem with United. In the dcwncoiler area, direction of all downcoilers and associated equipment is almost complete. Progress is continuing cn auxiliary motors and magnetic brakes. In the ceil conveyor area, bolt up continued cn structural bents and stringers for conveyora #7 through 10. Installation of chains was continued throughout the period at conveyors v3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and lO. In the finishing sill area, coupled tests were in. progress and continuing as required. Rework of finisher #6 and 7 scrowdowns was com pleted* During the run-in tests for the finishing mill 5 drive end pinion stand, the drive end-bearing for the drive motor failed. Further testing cf finishing mill #5 will be delayed until tbs bearing can be re-babbitted at the factory and rs-installed. The finishing mill #3 drive actor is also being dismantled and repaired because of a faulty stator winding. Luba oil #4- circulation has been satisfied and is now being tied in to the bearings on the pusher side of the ihraaee for use in coupled tests. Korgcdl 1 has permanent oil in the qystaa and is ready to support coupled taste. Grease systems #17, 13 and 19 in the finisher area ware completed during the period. The one remaining Sier-Bath pump for lube oil #5-1 was returned from the fhetoxy after rework and will be re installed next Monday. One Xngeraoll-Baad air compressor arrived at the job site during the period. Installation of the sdeplatcs and compressor is new in progress, however, the after coders for this compressor have not arrived yet. Progress was continued during the period m alignment of twelve Allis-Cfcalmer9* pumps in Seale Pits #1, 2 and 3 during the poriod. Their work is now essentially complete except for minor punch list items. I!oeschl-Edwards continued with good progress during the period cn rolling door installation in the Hot Strip Hill. Fine doors were measured for fabrication and cne remain8 to be measured. 49 doors have bean installed in the Hot Strip Mill with 23 remaining to be installed. Further work on sotor install atIon for pewer operated doors is pending an assignment of work because of a current craft dispute on this subject. i'frron Cornish Company installed accoustical celling in the scheduling office complex and director room during the period. Bloma Glass Coopery is presently glaring doers and windows in the Hot Strip Mill Area as they become available. 0wane Corning Fiberglae Company continued with insulation of piping systems during the period. 213 feet of steam line was insulated during the period and 13,000 feet has been insulated to date. Insulation in the oil cellar was also maintained on lube oil system #4 and lube oil system #11 during the period. Fire protection systems by Grinnsl Company is as follows: system #1 bstwsm odium 14 and 17 in the oil cellar, system #2 between coluan 17 and 22 and system #3 between column 22 and 27 are now piped-up complete. Delta Pipeline Contractors installed 1,399 linear feet of service piping in the Hbt Strip Mill and 2oll Shop during the period for- a total of 20,700 linear feet and 20 service drops to date. Salmn-Brosiua continued daring the period with installation of refractory in reheat fhxnace #2 up-take and waste gas stack. At furnace.#!, refrac tory repair work was completed over three doors and castable walls were installed at the waste gas flue dampers. This subcontractor worked Saturday, September 30, on installation of combustion air and hob gas ducts in tha waste heat boiler area. Progress was continued during the period on insulation and lagging of the duct system for #1 F.D. and ID, fhns. Alignment of the W$ forced draft fan and drive was accomplished during the period and the housing for this fan ms installed. Major progress is centered around installation of the $3 induced draft and forced draft fan assembly. At the 2 unit, duct work is near completion and insu lation work initiated. Thi3 fan installation and related duct work oesntract is new 76$ complete. The Mo Piping (Contractor for the Waste Heat Boiler 2|* and over piping) is new 94$ complete. During the period, this contractor installed floor drains for the 154 elevation floor and hangar installation for the main steam line. During the period, progress was also maintained on additional newly designed steam loops and boiler feed pzsp drains as well as service water piping. Ths #3 waste boiler safety valve exhaust piping is now essentially complete. Norm Woolley (Contractor for the Waste Heat Boiler 2* and under piping) continued during the period with installation of air heater piping, steam'and fuel oil piping for the three boilers. PVC piping to the chelating and sulfite equipment is now complete. This contractor is 55$ complete. Mbmeapoli^Heneynll (Instrumentation Contractor for the Waste Heat Boiler Area) continued throughout the period with installation of InstruMnte and |* stainless steel piping between ths boiler drums and tha oentrd room instrument panels. Bolt up was also consisted at the east end of the mill. The louver framing steel is now 50% erected. 3.6 Mftchar^calt Lcftus Engineering continued with good progress in the soaking pit area. During the period, the five cinder bell cleancut doors for batteries #4, 5 and 6 were installed. Also the emergency air damper doors were installed for these three batteries as well. Installation of the fuel oil heaters for the abenre batteries were installed. During the period, refractory work was continued at pits #20, 19 and 18 cn walls and floors. Refractory work at batteries #1 through 4 consisted mainly of . collecting fines and related archways. The steal framing for the archways and collecting flues at batteries #1, 2 and 3 is now 802 complete. Deck v plate installation at the mezzanine floor is essentially complete and the ' floor framing at Elevation 124 is 902 complete. Stairways are now 65% complete at battery #6 and 152 complete at battery #5- The coke oven gas and natural gas piping between the manifolds and burners for batteries #5 and 6 are 902 complete. The 3* and larger cooling water piping for batteries #5 and 6 is 952 complete. Progress during the period was also maintained on combustion air piping, dilution air piping, steam piping and fuel oil piping. #6 battery piping is now 652 complete and leading other batteries progress wise. 3*7 Pinto** Delia Pipeline Contractors continued during the period with pre-ffcbrlostion of pips sigjports and 24" through 14" cooling water return piping. The subgrade railroad slabs are now 30/C complete in this building. The slabs were installed at the vest portion of the building. 5*3 Structural and Miscellaneous Steel: 50 tons of structural steel was erected at the Stripper Gliding for a total to date of 823 tons. Structural steel, bolt up was also continued on this structure during the period. 6. 7150. 7156 and 7159 - PICKLE AREA 6.2 Concrete* 118 cubic yards of concrete was placed in the #4 and 5 Pickle line facility during the period far & total to date of 6,039 cubic yards. In the Green Coil Storage Building, 14 cubic yards of concrete was placed far a total to date of 5,586 cubic yards. At the Pickle Coil Storage Building, 195 cubic yards of concrete was placed for a total to data of 3,149 cubie yards. 6.3 Structural end Miscellaneous Steel: 120 tons of structural steel was erected during the period at the Pickle Coil Storage Building for a total to date of 227 tons. At the Qreen Coil Storage Building, 3,800 square Installed for a total to date of 17,930 square feet. 13,100 square feet of roofing was installed fbr a total to date of 84,080 square foot. 6.6 Ohio Valley Riggers have ecnpleted the erection of cranes AG3*a402 and 403 in the Qreen Coll Storage Building.
