Carpet Underlayment A mastic laminant using a fire retardant urethane foam in place of jute successfully passed the GM heat and fire resistance specifi cations for carpet sound-deadening underlayment. Samples of this combination will be submitted to Fisher Body for their approval. Rust Preventive Mastic The sound-attenuating and rust preventative mastic membrane designed to conform and bond to the floor plan during the paint bake cycle has been given a favorable initial rating in tests by Fisher Body and Ford. Work is now underway to improve stain resistance and anti blocking properties by use of a film bonded to the top surface. II. MINERAL PRODUCTS A. RAW MATERIALS AND NEW FORMULATIONS A trial conducted at Charmian using air-floated clay for the standard material produced a satisfactory white granule with a potential annual savings of $17,000. More extended runs are planned to verify this ,, result. A review of test panels exposed in Hagerstown and South Bound Brook show no apparent weathering differences between the present silicone after-treatment and the stearic acid - A1C1, modified system after IS months weathering. Test roofs containing appropriate controls have ; been applied on homes in South Bound Brook, Charleston, W. Va., and Hagerstown areas to further establish weathering performance of the new after-treatment. Granules with the new treatment must behave the same as the regular product, particularly from a sooting standpoint, so that no differences in color will result by mixture of shingle products produced with both type granules.
