Kan/J.Cr " T Rozand k'C: /> f On 2/4/74, a bulk shipment of copolymer 390 was rejected by Nixon for con tamination, and returned to Burlington. Initial contamination checks when the trailer was loaded showed in-specification contamination counts on both hatches. Subsequent checks of the retained samples for this load also showed in-specification counts. Upon return of the trailer to Burlington, samples were taken from the hatches and tested for contamination. When sampling these hatches, some surface contamination was noted. Based on past experience, this did not appear to be a cause for rejection. This surface contamination is normally brushed aside, and the sample taken from beneath the top portion of the truck. A total of five samples were taken from this trailer by Burlington Quality Control and all contamination counts were within our current specification for shipment to Nixon. On 2/S a Quality Control technician from Nixon visited Burlington, and two additional samples of this trailer were taken. Again these samples showed in-specification contamination counts. This trailer was shipped back to Nixon on 2/6, and again rejected by them for contamination. A visit to Nixon was made on this date by B. Johnson and H. Horton. Inspection of the trailer again showed surface contamination. By Nixon's method, which was a one-pound sample or larger, heavier contamin ation was evident when this material was brushed aside and a thief sample of the trailer was taken. Microscopic examination of this contamination showed a large portion of the contaminants to be compound rather than resin contam ination. The trailer was returned to Burlington and blown off. Also on this date, a bulk shipment of 10-5R was rejected by Nixon for contam ination, Their Quality Control testing showed one hatch to be high out of specification for contamination, while the other hatch sampled was acceptable. Burlington Quality Control checks of this trailer, when loaded, showed in specification contamination counts on both hatches. Rechecks of the retained samples from this load also showed in-specification counts, A third shipment (replacement for the rejected 390) was also rejected by Nixon for contamination. This rejection apparently was based on sampling from a hatch that was not sampled at Burlington due to the level of the resin in that hatch. Apparently during shipment, the resin shifted enough to bring the le vel of this hatch up to where it could be reached by the person sampling at Nixon, and a sample was taken. Rechecks of the two hatch samples retained at Burlington showed these hatches to be within specifications. These two hatches were also within specification when tested by Nixon. COLORITE 012530 Page 2 All bulk shipments for Nixon are currently being monitored on a one-pound basis for contamination rather than the standard 100-gram sample for each hatch. Production has placed a plastic cover over the loading chute near the air slide valve at the bin bottom to reduce the possibility of outside contamination being introduced to the resin truck. Also, plastic covers are being' used on the hatches after loading to reduce surface contamination from the hatch closings. Recommendations for avoiding future problems are as follows: 1. A visit to Nixon'Quality Control should be made to observe their current test method so that a method of correlation can be established. There is currently some question as to sampling method and the amount of sample being tested. 2. The method of sampling bulk shipments at Burlington when loaded should be standardized so that hatch samples are taken from the top of the hatch after it is completely loaded. 3. Quality Control should be notified by Production when a trailer which has been previously used for compound is used so that any additional precautionary sampling and testing necessary may be accomplished.
