Ford Motor Company encourages the "interdivisional" use of specifications, and while a prefix such as ESA shows that the specification was written and released originally by Chassis Engin eering, there may be other users of the specification, in fact, the original releasing office may
or may not continue to use it. Prefixes are not altered to reflect such occurrences, unless the suffix letter is also advanced to reflect more stringent or added requirements, in which case the specification becomes a ''new" specification
An Engineering Specification is a performance specification for the part, is issued normally in conjunction with an engineering drawing, and is the responsibility of the affected design activity. A typical ES callout is written as follows: ES-D4AE-6015-A.
A Manufacturing Standard describes non-production materials - those which are used in menu lecturing operations or maintenance but which do not become part of the vehicle. A typical Manufacturing Standard callout is written as follows: M-2C151(B). Manufacturing Standards have been available by subscription since 1952. Further details on that system are available from Manufacturing Engineering Evaluation and Standards Department (Address: See page 5).
Engineering Material Specifications and Manufacturing Standards share a oommon alpha numeric system of identification to identify the basic generic classifications of materials.
Only the prefix letters are different. In sharing a common system, the non-significant digits following the generic classification are never duplicated.
Publication and Distribution of Engineering Material Specifications
ES-M's are available on a subscription basis. Under this system, currently active, new and revised specifications are distributed automatically to individuals/offices within Ford Motor Company and to suppliers whose names appear on the subscription system mailing list. Subscriptions are available at nominal cost to all suppliers. Inquiries regarding this service should be addressed to the Materials Engineering Department, Engineering & Research Staff (Address: See page 5). For those suppliers who do not choose to subscribe, individual copies also are available (no charge) at the same address.
Index of Active Specifications
An index is provided for each volume of active specifications. Included in the index is the latest revision date for each specification. In the absence of revisions, the original release date is taken as the latest revision date. Suppliers should use the index information to check the volumes for completeness and the individual specifications in each volume for currency. The responsibility for compliance with current specifications (latest revision date on page 1) rests with the supplier.
Additionally, the index indicates the product engineering office which has responsibility for the specifications by a capital letter code, and other produce engineering offices using the specification by a lower case letter code. The letter codes used are;
A - Chassis Engineering
R - Ford Parts & Service Division
B -^Body & Electrical Engineering
S - Engineering 4c Research Staff
E - Engine Engineering
T - Heavy Truck Engineering
F - Electrical flc Electronics Division
W - Transmission
H - Climate Control Division
U - Ford do Brasil
L - Light Truck Engineering
Y - Ford of Europe
N - Ford Tractor Operations
Z - Ford of Australia
P - Transmission & Axle Engineering
2 - Engineering 5c Research Staff
