INTER-ORGANIZATION TO. DISTRIBUTION ATTENTION: FROM; R. U. Laundrie DATE: July 17, 1974 Cofpinfe Sifefy Dtpi/tacit JUL 1 8 !97<1 Roy N. Johnson SUBJECT: AIR PURGING OF BULK CONTAINERS OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE RESINS The vapor spaces of bulk tank cars and tank trucks of polyvinyl chloride resins are a potential source of high exposure to vinyl chloride vapors especially If container has been sealed for some time. To obviate exposures of your employees, please Institute at once a work practice that encompasses purging of the vapor spaces with plant air (using a lance). The greatest potential exposure is to that employee that takes a sample for Quality Control purposes* Sampling for resin should be accomplished by using a sample container attached to a pole rather than bending over an Open hatch afld scooping the sample out. Adequate purging should be obtained by air purging with ten times th volume of the.vapor space. As progress is made In lowering the vinyl chloride content of the resins, it may be possible to eliminate the air purge completely. Send me a copy of your practice. RWL/byo Distribution: J.
