Williams m,, Areia Sippet July 30, 1982 Industrial Hygiene RECEIVED AUG 0 5 1982 Fred WiJliamS Monitoring for Personal Exposure to ASBESTOS During Pipeline Demolition Arrangements were made to monitor for personal exposure to asbestos fibers during a major job of demolition of asbestos containing insulation from old piping. Personnel from the Central Insulating Group were involved in a typical demolition project in an area along E street between 3rd and 5th Avenues during the first week of July. Eight personal samples were collected during this time period, together with an area sample at the MCB Unit. Kaylo asbestos insulation with double application and protective covering was being removed from a 4" pipeline. Proper plant guidline procedures were observed to be followed throughout the course of the job. Personnel involved wore adequate respiratory protection while the old insulation material was wetted with a fire hose, dropped to a plastic lined truck bed and covered for transport to the landfill. Samples were collected for 15 minute time periods on filter cassettes while employees were actively engaged in specific job tasks. These data substantiate the observation that asbestos fibers are adequately contained when plant procedures are followed. During this monitoring occasion, it was reported to a member of the Safety First Committee that asbestos materials from this demolition project were not being properly handled at the Goff Mountain Landfill. Investigation by Industrial Hygiene did not reveal any problems or deficiencies at the landfill in terms of exposure or procedure. Conversation with Mr. Fizer and the dozer operator indicated all asbestos materials are covered with soil within 24 hours of delivery.
