Sanders Transite Machining arid Cutting Address BRP Date September 30, 1981 On September 21, I conducted a survey in the carpenter's shop of Central Shops to evaluate the potential for employee exposure to asbestos during the machining and cutting of transite. The breathing zone samples have been submitted for analysis and a report will follow. My qualitative evaluation of the'point source exhaust ventilation in the shop is that there is ample capture velocity. Some particles of the transite escape the ventila tion system. This is due to centrifugal force of the lathe rotation. On September 25, I observed a general works employee change the collection drum for this exhuast system. A breathing zone sample was collected during this procedure and will be reported when analysis is completed. I have the following recommendations based on my observa tion of these procedures. 1. The exhaust system is disconnected from the collector "hood" and used to vacuum clean the lathe at the end of the shift. The size of this flexible duct limits access to some areas of the equipment. A reducer and short piece of 1" or 2" vacuum hose would enable the operator to do a better job of cleaning. 2. The lid on the collector drum is rusted through in places and should be replaced. 3. The waste drum should be labeled as required by the asbestos regulation immediately after replacement. If I may be of some assistance, please call. P. J.
