I amof the opinion that this has been a neuritis due to the handling of gasoline particularly the kind containing tetra-ethyl lead. I advise that he be given six months leave of absence until his condition improves. The least length of time I advise is six months. A, CORBETTF.R.G.S. 2735 Victoria Avenue Regina, Sask. Imperial Oil Limited, Regina, Saak. July 11, 1944. Dear Sirs: Re: Mr. TLis man Las worked at Imperial Oil for the past nine years. All of that time on the loading rack until May 50th, of this year. He has never had anything to do with handling lead direct but states that his hands are very often wet with Red Gasoline for some hours each day and that this occurs mostly in hand ling the "thief" in testing for water in 5 to 10 cars of Red Gasoline each day. His hands are wet also from the drip that Comes from the cap under the cars. He states that he gets rather a lot of vapor from the top of the car that is being filled with red gas, as he must watch to see that it does not overflow. He first felt ill in September 1942 when he complained of the backs of his hands and his mouth and his stomach having a burning sensation. This he describes as a feeling like pins and ndeales or formication. He went to see Dr. Ritchie in June of *43 and also saw Dr. Kells during the same month. They took XRays of his stomach. These showed nothing abnormal. In September he saw Drs. Duncan and Israel. They did blood count and urinalysisj these were found normal. At the present time he complains of the formication on the backs of both hands but not in the end or fingers. He has a burning feeling in the lips and on the end of the tongue and in the stomach under his ribs, sometimes on one side and sometimes on the other, or in the centre. His appetite is very poor has a nasty taste in his mouth but has never vomited. There has been no headache or diarrhoea. He has not suffered any pain and there is no indication of any Blue Line on the gums. His knee jerk and other reflexes are normal. He complains of a feeling of general lack of push, feels more tired at the end. of the day then he should. Though his muscular strength seems to be good he complains of general weakness. He suffers considerably from a feeling of apprehension that he will get worse. This probably on account of what the other Doctors have told him. He suffers some from Insomnia though it is not marked. He has the appearance of some Pallor but no loss of weight or tremor. Though he does not present the classic picture of Tetra-Ethyl-Lead poisoning, the long period over which he has had his hands wet with red gas, the presence of the above symptoms, and his nervous condition, make me feel that it would be wise to change his work to some place where he would not come into con tact with lead, and perhaps give him a holiday for a fewweeks. Dear Sir: Attached please find copy of letter from Doctor M. 0. Israels regarding one of our employees, Mr. This man has been in our employ since August 9th, 1935 and will be 39 years old on July 22nd. Me have always found him a very good worker and his attitude is exceptionally fine. Mr. is not worrying about sickness benefits but would lilfe the six months leave and the assurance that he will be given employment at the end of six months even though his condition might possibly be worse than at present and that he will receive the same benefits he would be entitled to had he not taken the six months leave, including Thrift Plan, Hospital ization, Group Insurance, Sick Benefits, etc. He has worked at our loading rack since the summer of 1936 until about four months ago when he was transferred to 0 P Y a watchman's job. During this period his hands have come in contact with considerable gasoline and at present he complains of a prickling feeling in his hands continually. We do not see howwe can make a Workmen's Compensa tion case of this and as his doctor feels he should get away from refinery entirely for a six months period he thinks he should follow this advice. - - Will you please advise what action we should take ana what we can promise him regarding employment and benefits after his leave.
