SUMMARY
The semiannual asbestos in air survey vas conducted In the New Cell Service facility (Block 56).
The results of 10 samples ranged from a high of 0.58 to a low of 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter greater than 5 microns In length. The results are all below the present TLV (threshold limit value) established by the OSHA Act. However, 3 of the samples recorded relatively high numbers (see results sheet) of 0.58, 0.39 and 0.20 fibers per cubic centimeter which would fall to meet the proposed standard of 0.1 fibers.
Good housekeeping, careful safe handling procedures and complete employee cooperation are a must to ensure that we maintain a good safe work environment.

INTRODUCTION '
The.semiannual asbestos in air survey has been conducted for the
_ first half of 1977.- The results were- al-l-uelow the present TLV.
established by OSHA.
................... ~
METBOf......
------------ --------................. ............
The asbestos'samples were collected from the operators* breathing zone by employing a 37 millimeter milllpore filter mounted in an open face filter holder. The air vas drawn through the filter with a pump calibrated to run at or near 2 liters per minute. .... \ ...
Slides were prepared and observed under the microscope with a magnification setting of 500. Fibers, 5 microns in length or longer, were counted to determine the fiber concentration present in the calculated volume of air.
RESULTS
The monitoring results were all below the present asbestos standard of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter greater than 5 microns In length. However, 3 of the samples were relatively high, measuring 0.20, 0.39 and 0.58 fibers per cubic centimeter (see results sheet). These 3 samples would fail to meet the new proposed standard of 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Some key safety points to remember when handling asbestos will be re emphasized here as they are essential to our employees health and well being.
Operators are required to wear paper suits, rubber gloves and approved respirators whenever asbestos is being handled (the Stock Department has on hand the MSA Comfo respirator Type BM 2301, with the asbestos dust covers).
The asbestos should always be handled wet (the sacks should be wet down before cutting open). Practice good handling techniques to avoid spilling asbestos. All efforts should be made to prevent asbestos from becoming airborne* After the Job is completed, asbestos waste end empty asbestos sacks should be sealed and labeled in Impermeable bags and containers. The asbestos hould never be blown or shook off the contaminated suits. It should be vacuumed and placed In the proper designated containers.

ST0002566
Always wash hands after handling asbestos and never carry cigarettes or candy In pockets while working with asbestos. The last point is to always be on the alert for problem areas, report them to supervision and have the area monitored if it is suspect.
CONCLUSIONS
The survey results indicate that ve are below the present TLV, however, as mentioned, the new standard being proposed would lower the TLV to 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter; This new standard will require each person to very strictly follow all safe handling procedures, practice good housekeeping, and constantly be on the alert for problem areas If ve are to meet the new proposed regulation.
