PHILLIPS REGIONAL INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST DOSH - NEW ORLEANS subject IH SURVEY - PORT TAMPA MARKETING TERMINAL On November 11, 1976, I visited the Port Tampa (FL) Marketing Terminal to review operating conditions with regard to evaluation of potential asbestos exposure during truck repair work. There was no work being done at the time of the visit. The terminal was in the midst of a changeover to new tractors and trailors and do not anticipate any brake or clutch work in the near future. The plant has one mechanic on staff and he replaces the brake shoes (i.e., pulls the old and inserts new ones - no grinding) doing all of the work outdoors. The change was made about twice a year on the old trucks. The current plan is for all repair work to be done on a contract basis for the new rigs. The plant has two bottom loading racks and one double-sided top loading rack. The newer bottom loading rack carries three grades of gasoline and Jet A. The old rack also carries diesel. Due to poor concrete grading there is the possibility of accumulation of gasoline following a spill in the loading area. The intent is to work on elimination of the top loading facilities. The warehouse operation has essentially ceased. No Droduct is being handled, but some batteries and accessories are stored for the Tampa area. Twenty drivers work out of the facility including two for packaged goods. They work a 10-hour day, 40-hour v/eek schedule. There aDDears to be no problem with regard to potential asbestos exposure.
