DeBruyn , Industrial Liaison Officer, and 1 Irwin A. Benjamin, Chief, fire Research Section, both of the National Bureau of Standards. Mr. DeBruyn spoke about the history of the Re search Associate program at the Bureau, outlining its beginning in 1892, its progress through World War I and its development to the present. He reported that the American Dental Association has, con tinually maintained a Research Associate for the past **7 years. ,/l'Vl^ OH *D- * or nfp OL WO.IQU n/Yi - 15 and urgency of the metrication problem. We should not ignore the problem now, and then later, when forced to comply with new require ments, be in a disadvantageous position. Old test data will be affected by new measures. The committee recommended that the mem bership participate in industry activities toward metrication. It was further recommended that a task group be appointed to develop recommended metric units for all basic board dimensions and that the recommendations be sent to the Manufacturing and Mining Committee to be utilized in their work on conversion to the metric system. A task group of Messrs. Shull, Lehnert and Weightman was appointed. ITEM 11-63-73 ASBESTOS IN JOINT COMPOUND The secretary reported that member companies were appointing representatives to serve on a Special Association Committee to eval uate and recommend a pilot test program. The first meeting of the Special Committee had been scheduled for August 8, 1973 in Chicago. ITEM M - NEW BUS I HESS a) Texturing of Gypsum Wallboard Ceilings. The need for an Association special recommendation on the application of water-based spray texturing to ceilings was reiterated. A draft copy was re viewed and approved for immediate printing. b) Laminating Gypsum Board to Ceilings. Mr. Abbey reported that there were problems in the fietd occuring wh^re a second layer of gypsum board had been laminated to ceilings several years ago without the use of fasteners. Some of these ceilings were separating and gypsum man ufacturers were being blamed for the casein type adhesive failures re sulting from improper application procedure. Mr. Abbey maintained that these practices were contrary to recommendations of the Association at that time. c) "ANSI Reporter" Publication. The Association has been dis tributing copies of the publication to the committee for information. The "ANSI Reporter" reports standards actions of ANSI as well as general news items. Comments and problem areas relating to ANSI standards actions should be forwarded through the Association. d) V/eights Supported by Wells. Mr. Lehnert reported that questions are frequently received concerning the structural values and recommendations for hanging shelving and brackets and the proper fasteners to use with wallboard. ,0-7 ;r
