It has been suggested that a new asbestos label might warn that the cancer risk associated with exposure to asbestos is increased by cigarette smoking. Several forms of cancer have been associated statistically with exposure to asbestos. Of all the forms, lung cancer is the most prominent. However, Dr. Selikoff, in papers published in 1968 and 1973, presented statistical evidence from which he concluded: (a) the risk of non-smoking asbestos workers developing lung cancer is no greater than that of the general population, and (b) the risk of asbestos workers with a smoking history developing lung cancer is eight times higher than the risk incurred by smokers not exposed to asbestos. These data certainly suggest that a synergism exists with respect to smoking and asbestos exposure in relation to the risk of lung cancer. No relationship was determined to exist between cigarette smoking and the other forms of cancer associated with asbestos workers, nor with asbestosis.
