RUMBLE <?<< 1981 April 03 RE: CONTINUOUS CASTER MARINITE TIP BUILDING Since initial production from the continuous casters, a limited quantity u/:~ of correctly prefabricated Marinite tip parts has caused our continuous caster operators to have to drill some holes and, occasionally, saw Marinite , /?&,> pieces. Sanding would have to occur even with the correct pieces in stock. ' On March 06 and 11, personal sampling pumps were utilized to sample for fibers on two individual tip builders. About one hour is involved in tip j building with sanding and drilling (if any is done) taking between/,ten and S J\/?fifteen minutes. Results showed concentrations of (3.98 and 1.49 fibers ^ per cubic centimenter. The OSHA standard states a time-weighted average 1 over an eight hour shift of 2 fibers/cc as the permissible exposure limit and a ceiling concentration (that which no employee shall be exposed to for any length of time) of 10 fibers/cc. Assuming that the peak concentration of airborne fibers is during a ten minute sanding period within the operation, the ceiling is not surpassed. We need not pursue engineering controls here since the fiber concentration falls below the OSHA limit. Concern from continuous caster operators, though, brought about this initial sampling and thus far one crew has been informed of exposure during this procedure. This information, along with the dangers of asbestos fiber exposure, and the following work practices will also be passed on to the remaining three crews. 1. Never blow off any accumulated Marinite dust since this will produce airborne fibers. 2. Use the vacuum cleaner to clean areas where sanding or drilling occurs. The vacuum cleaner should be lined with a polyethylene bag. 3. If sawing must be done, use the saw equipped with a dust collector located in the brickmason's area. 4. Wear the 3M 8710 (white) respirator when any Marinite dust is produced. (Correct fitting and use instructions also explained). 5.
