B y ro m ^ Safety Engineer Van Dyke cc: M r. G. Spahn M r. D. Brown Subject: Employe Exposure to Asbestos Fibers A sbestos fibers in the form of Johns-M ansville "tran site" boards a re used in all are as of the Canton F o rg e Plant as insulating end, side and bottom p la te s on induction heating coils, and a s h eat shields to p ro te c t perso n n el and machinery from gas furnace flue gas discharge. H eal shields a r e g e n e ra lly stan d a rd b o a rd s of uniform size and no m achm ing or excessive handling is required. However, for the various induction h e a te rs throughout the plant, approxim ately 50 different tra n s ite d e ta ils a re required, each requiring a g reat deal of machining. At this tim e, we know of no effective substitute for this m a te ria l in this application, and your a ssistan c e is requested in investigating this application and locating an acceptable substitute. To bring this plant into com pliance with F o rd and OSIIA Standards regarding u se of a sb e s to s , we a r e p roceeding with plans to p u rc h a se s e r v ic e s of an outside machining source to reproduce transite details as required, using sam p les of plates which the plant will supply. We a re also proceeding to produce draw ings on all n ecessary details as soon as practical so that a blanket o rd e r may be obtained and a sufficient supply of machined plates may be kept on hand. H ow ever, the sto ck in g of a g r e a t n u m b e r of plates in 50 d ifferent con fig u ratio n s and the inability to safely and legally m ake even the m ost minor in-plant ad justm ent to the configuration of these details will be extrem ely expensive and CONI 0444 M r. R. D. B yrom Sheet 2 8-13-73 could result in increased induction heater downtime and loss of production. F o r these reasons, it is im perative that the use of asb esto s fib e rs in this application be eliminated as soon as possible. RC/lk Info, copy Mr. J. L. Crandall Mr. A. Darin K.
