iMiy DgCTIOH,:. In the work by Fierz-David and Rutishauer on the
constitution of Alisarine lakes (reported In Helvetica Chiaica Acta Sj&, 1298-1311, 1941) the preparation of a calcium-aluminum complex of Alisarine {1, 2 dihydroxy anthraquinone) free of bubatrata was described. Interest in the possible Talus of this product lead to its preparation and evaluation.
AgDJIQNCLUSIONS;
Samples of Alisarine Toner, prepared by a modification of a method outlined in the Fiers-Bavid and Rutishauer article, were much darker than Alisarine Lake, RT-332-D, both in full shade enamel and by rubout. The dry color, because of its hard texture did not show the tinting strength to be expected in a substrata free product. Although the product was not analysed, the yield obtained indicated that it possessed the suggested constitution - 4 mole Alisarine - 2 atoms aluminum - 3 atoms calcium - 5 mols Hz0.
Samples of both dry color and pulp hare been submitted to F & F as KS 269 and K8 346, respectively. Three months Florida exposure of KS 269 by our laboratory (Series 10091) showed it to he superior to RT-332-D and practically equal to Arylide Haroon, RT-551-D.
The manganese-chromium derivative was also prepared and although bluer and duller than the Ca-Al complex, was slightly hstter in lightfastness by Fade-O-Meter test.
Further work Is planned to he done at the Newark Laboratory.

The procedure employed was based on Experiment 7 of the Fierz-D&vid report and consists of addition of ths alkaline (HaOH) solution of Alisarine to calcium and aluminum acetates, followed by acidification and development at a boil. Use of an equivalent mixture of calcium and aluminum chlorides with sodium acetate gave better strength and lightfastness.
