Asbestos was removed according to procedures outlined in the Texas Operations "Asbestos Handbook" (April, 1985), Section IV. SPN Dismantling, Inc. employees eight-hour time-weighted average exposures to asbestos fibers did not exceed 0.11 flbers/cc. Gorgacz 474 Midland AN OPERATING UNIT OF THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY STOO15 0 15 Al-2772 page 1 INTRODUCTION SPN Dismantling, Inc. was contracted by Texas Operations to remove asbestos insulation from two gas turbine generators located at the A-100 Chlor-Alkali plant which is currently under demolition. The asbestos removal job took two, eight- hour days to complete In which personnel were monitored for one, eight-hour period. Asbestos monitoring of contractor personnel was done to verify that the job procedures were adequate to assure compliance with OSHA Standard 1910.1001 and Texas Operations Safety Standard No. 45. MONITORING METHODOLOGY Asbestos samples were taken with battery operated MSA sampling pumps, calibrated for 2 liters/mfn. flow rates before and after sampling. Asbestos was collected on a 37 mm filter holder containing a 0.8 micron Mllllpore Type AA filter. Fibers were counted by the Analytical Services Department. EVALUATION CRITERIA The evaluation of exposure levels were based on the following criteria using the more stringent of established or recommended guidelines: Oow IHG (Flbers/CC) TLV (Flbers/CC) Asbestos 2.0* 2.0* * If greater than 5.0 micrometers In length The Dow Industrial Hygiene Guide and Threshold Limit Value(TLV) are measures of acceptable 8-hour time-weighted average exposures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Two SPN Contractor personnel were monitored on February 7, 1985 while removing asbestos from two gas turbine generators at the A-100 block. SPN personnel for this particular job task are not being overexposed to airborne asbestos fibers. RECOMMENDATIONS SPN supervision should Inform all employees with a potential for exposure to asbestos of the hazards of overexposure to asbestos fiber: the informing should be documented. bbs
