McLaughlin March 8, 1979 INTERIM HANDLING PROCEDURES FOR ASBESTOS Before beginning the removal of asbestos, do the following: 1. Work Area should be designated "Limited Access Area," should be roped off and ap propriate signs, conforming to Engineering Standard S-4-T, 7.6, shall be posted at all approaches. The Access Area will have a controlled Entry/Exit location with a Sign-in/Out Log Sheet used to record the names and times of persons entering/exiting the area. 2. All asbestos insulation to be removed will be wetted down first. Use a knife to re remove, wherever possible, instead of a saw. 3. Do not bring food or cigarettes into the area, nor consume any food or smoke in the area. 4. While removing the asbestos insulation, take care not to drop it. Promptly place the waste in a sealed impermeable bag which has a caution label as to contents, 5. Respiratory protection will be provided to all personnel where the permissible exposure limits may be exceeded. 6. Special clothing -- Tyvek suits with hood and foot coverings will be worn by employees who may be exposed to concentrations which exceed the limits. 7. Air sampling may be conducted while employees are removing asbestos-contained materials to determine airborne concentrations. DUP 0904773 SC-DP-05800 8. Bags containing asbestos shall be disposed of in the appropriate landfill. 9. During final clean-up of Work Area, do not dry sweep area nor use an air hose. Use a vacuum cleaner (with hepa filter) or wet down before sweeping. Also vacuum clothes upon completion of work. .
