Environmental Science Curriculum Advisory Committee (Summary of Committee Meeting Activities) The curriculum committee of the State Community College Advisory Board met at State Community College on February 21, 1994 at 1:00 p.m. Present members included: Terry Lewis, Ray Smiley and John Justice. The Committee reviewed the first year courses and determined the need for a freshman level course for the first year. Ray Smiley will take the lead in developing this course. He estimates the syllabus will be completed by early March. The completed curriculum will be Included in the announcement for the March meeting. The admission requirements were discussed. It was determined that students who whose ACT, SAT or ASSET score qualified them for English 111 and trigonometry should be successful in the program. Therefore, the test scores achieved on these tests will initially be used as the admission standards. As part of the recruitment procedures, students will be encouraged to take Chemistry and Biology as part of their high school curriculum. The program will use the summer workshop as an opportunity to correct any deficiencies which students might have. There was discussion as to whether to make internships optional for those students who might elect to spend the summer obtaining certification in one of the environmental areas or health and safety. Additional research and discussion are needed in this matter. Now that the curriculum is in the advanced stage of development, we will begin identifying equipment needs for the program. We will also investigate the possibility of sharing equipment with industry or the agency. Terry Lewis will be meeting with representatives of the Gateway Project from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency on March 4, 1994. He will update them on our program and explore opportunities of cooperation with the federal agency. The committee reviewed the syllabus for DAPR 150.
