Ware October 7, 1986 HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Exposure Monitoring - Construction Storeroom Attached are the results of the Asbestos'monitoring performed in the Construction Storeroom, Building 2002, at Institute on August 19 and 26, 1986. The initial monitoring was done on August 19, 1986 and the follow-up on August 26, 1986. R. W. Cutlip and M. V. Burdette were monitored while dispensing asbestos gaskets to be used in field applications. R. W. Cutlip and M. V. Burdette were equipped with Half-face respirators containing HEPA filters while pulling gaskets. This would indicate that their actual inhalation exposures were lower than the reported concentrations. The exposure monitoring that was performed on August 19, 1986 on R. W. Cutlip indicated levels that would be considered high if this many gaskets (80-100 per hour) were dispensed over several hours. A Time Weighted Average was not determined because R. W. Cutlip was involved with dusting and cleaning out bins the remainder of the day, which could have caused exposure. The samples collected on August 26, 1986 on M. V. Burdette as a follow-up for long term sampling, show that the air concentration of Asbestos was below the 0.1 fiber/cc action level, but also note that she only pulled 14 gaskets. It is recommended that the gasket bins be cleaned once a month with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter and that the gaskets be vacuum cleaned before placing in the bins. This would considerably eliminate exposure potential to asbestos fibers. When the job is expected to last for several hours the employee must wear recommended protective equipment for asbestos and take a shower at the end of the day. We also recommend that the asbestos gasket pulling job should be assigned to only those personnel who have been trained, in the OSHA asbestos standard, and know the hazards of the material.
