Bubba Bean replaced Duffy O'Briant on the committee for the remainder of this term. Duffy is not expected to return to work until after the first of the year because of a long-term illness. J. W. Hughes was elected chairman of the committee replacing Duffy as chairman. Dennis Kos was the guest speaker and presented a very thorough orientation on NSI handling. He also answered questions from the committee and con cluded by presenting an action plan which addresses the concerns previously developed by this committee. OLD BUSINESS NSI Concerns for safely handling NSI. Action A safety meeting on NSI was conducted for all Zone 1 maintenance personnel. A safety meeting is planned for all maintenance craftsmen throughout the plant. Dennis Kos, Mfg. Supt. for Styrene, discussed NSI safety with the . HSC as noted above. Unit/Craft Safety Representative Training A question had been previously raised as to the possibility of training the representatives prior to starting the assignment or immediately after assign ment rather than conducting training about mid-way through the term, as is the current practice. SC 001680 LAM002882 Action Discussed with PMSB. SHAC has been tasked by the PMSB to investigate the problem and make recommendations at the next PMSB meeting. One possible consideration is extending the length of the term from six months to a year. The Hourly Safety Committee will be asked for their input at the next HSC meeting. NEW BUSINESS Asbestos Handling When only insulators were handling asbestos, used material was bagged and the bags immediately removed via pickup truck to a special dumpster. Now that other crafts are handling asbestos, the material is bagged, but not immediately picked up. In fact, some bags remain at the truck stops for several weeks, resulting in badly deteriorated bags and some asbestos spillage Action Will discuss problem with appropriate supervision for resolution. Tank Car Loading Some tank cars, particularly those being loaded in the AN rack, are very close to the sidewalk. Signs alerting pedestrians that unloading/loading operations are underway are needed in the area. Action This is a matter to be resolved by the Materials Handling Department, and will be turned over to them for resolution. Housekeeping The committee expressed their opinion that the housekeeping throughout the plant was as bad as they had ever seen it. Action SHAC Chairman stated that the committee played an important role in maintaining a clean plant and that their cooperation is needed. The concern was brought up at the PMSB. The committee was reminded that the Annual Safety and Housekeeping Inspection is scheduled for the week of October 24, and that pre paration for the inspection should already be under way.
