The second cneloau.ro describes the results of chronic inhalation studies to fwoolora 1242 and 1254. The results of theca studies led to the preparation of the third ena 1 osure --Mygione Guide prepared by a committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Associa tion.
The acute and chrouic inhalation data have led us to
the conclusion fcha t the Ar odors are not seriously
tonic materials, The industrial use and manuiactur-
ing, experience for over SO years couiirms the low
degree of hazard, He have never indicated that the
poiyclilorina ted bl phenyls are "non toxic". We do
recognise that the can be systemic effects if there
is pi'ol on,pod and r cpented inhalation of vapors when
the materials are used at elevated temperaturns. We
have also warned a bout prevention of repeated and
or ./longed' ` con act, also because of the poeui-
bility of ay;
injury.

temperature /.roclor 1242 is soiude to the extent
of 203 (plus or minus 10) pgr.;; Arocxor l;l'4o--106
(plus or minus 14) ppb; Arcelor 12p4--50 (plus or
minus 2) ppb.

In preliminary fish toxicity studies, the results
from our consultin': laboratory indicate that rainbow;

and 12p4 and greater than 100 ppm for /woelor 1250.
Those fish toxicity data ore confusing to us if one
considers the ppb iv.nyc of solubility. Vo are cur
rently trying to confirm the results for additional
analysis.

The only published dots on fish toxicity of which we
are aware ia a March, 1957 report from the 11 eh end Ulldllfc Service. Thin report resulted from a study of the toxicity of more than 4,000 chemical0 to larval lampreys, and fishes. The enclosed for-ox copy of the title pane of the report, the explanation of the table and the tabulated results indicate that the four Arcelor compound investigated snowed no effect at 5 ppn ih this abbreviated experiment of 24 hours.
I have also enclosed a copy of the method of analysis developed in Sweden. This io currently being used, I believe, by tho notions involved in OECD committee work on pesticide residues. Professor Uidmark at the Institute* of Analytical Chemistry, University of .Stockholm, provided us with this copy. In May ho told us that os with many gas chromatographic methods, it has been difficult to reproduce results In various laboratories using this technique. There is underway at the proa-ant time, I believe, a very extensive
program of exchanging samples among a number of lab oratories In luro-io to determine if the proccunre
will produce the t.r-.uo results (within rc* tonal 1 e limits of experimental error) from the several lab oratories.

Jly associate. Jack Garrett, will be at Duluth the woak of July 2U and I am cr.ro he will try to res you also at that time. Also, be. Scott Tucker, who has icon responsible for sotting up our analytical facilities, will bo very htpoy to discuss any details concerning the analytical technique. If we can help you in tins respect, please let me know.
Very truly yours.
