BRAKE SPIDER MOUNTING FLANGE (DM600 and DM800 Chassis with SWD68 Bogie and 11.00 x 22 Tires) PURPOSE To inform field of possible modification to spider mounting flange when replacing axle housing. INFORMATION The original SWD68 bogie series design featured aflat on top of brake spider mounting flange parallel with the hori zontal center line of cast housing. This was necessary to avoid a potential interference between flange and air cylinder when bogies are fitted with 11.00 x 22 tires and 7.00 inch long slack adjusters. To standardize components and introduce a product improvement 7.75 inch long slack adjusters have replaced the 7.00 inch long slack adjusters on current production units. This change increased the clearance gap sufficiently to discontinue the operation required for the flats. However, when installing new type axle housing without flats on the brake spider mounting flange to replace one with flats and 7.00 inch slack adjusters, be sure to hand grind sufficient clear ance between brake spider mounting flange and air cylinder. See illustration. RECOMMENDATION The modification to brake spider mounting flange is required only to eliminate possible interference that may develop when replacing housing.
