DISC BRAKE SERVICE PRECAUTIONS *
6. Inspect the brake drum and, if necessary, refinish.

3. During removol and Installation of a wheel
- assembly, exercise care not to interfere with and
. damage Ihe caliper splash shield or the bleeder
- ' screw fitting. .
..
The maximum inside braking surface diameter Is shown on each brake drum (Fig. 33). If ifc,
masimum inside braking surface diameter showa on the drum is exceeded either by wear, or refinithing, the drum must be replaced. Refer la Port 13-03 far refinishing.
BRAKE BOOSTER;
` . ' :": ''
- Check the booster operation or noted under Power - _
brake Functional Test. II the broke booster is damoged '
or inoperative, replace it with a new boaster. The
brake booster is serviced only as an assembly,
including Ihe check valve.

DRUM BRAKES

c
Remove Ihe wheel from the drum, ond remove the
drum os outlined in Part 12-02.
i
Use an Industrial vacuum cleaner lo remove all dust I
from the backing plates and Interior'of the brake
drums.
^ 3. Inspect the brake shoes far excessive lining wear
or shoe damage. If the Doing is worn within 1/32
- Inch of the rivet heads orif Ihe shoes ore damaged,
they must be replaced. Replace any.fining that has
been contaminated with oil, grease or brake fluid.
Replace fining In axle sets. Prior to replacement of * ' lining, the drum diameter should be checked to
determine that the brake drum broking surface diameter It within specification. If the braking surface diomater exceeds specification, Ihe drum must be replaced.
4. Check the condition of brake shoes, retracting springs, hold-dawn springs, and drum far signs of overheating. If the lhaet bare a slight blue
coloring, indicating overheating, the retracting and
hold-down springs should be replaced. Overheated springs lose their pull and could causa Ihe new lining la wear prematurely, If
Alt brake tubing should be double flared properly to provide good leakproof connections. Clean the brake tubing by flushing with clean brake fluid before installation.
When connecting a lube to a hose, tube connector, or brake cylinder, lighten the tube fitting nut'to specified torque with Mtlbar Tool 11)2-144 or equivalent.
BRAKE HOSE .
A flexible brake hose should be replaced if it shows signs of softening, cracking, or othar damage.
When installing a new front brake hose, position the hate to ovoid contact with other chassis parti. On oS vehicles except- foirmont/Zephyr, ploce a new copper gasket over Ihe hose fitting and thread Ihe base assembly into Ihe front wheel cylinder or caliper. Falrmonl/Zephyr front hose does not require a cooper gasket and is reusable. Engoge Ihe opposite end of ihe hose to the bracket on (he frame. The while stripe on the hose should show no evidence af twisting. Install (he horseshoe-type retaining dip, and connect the lube to the hose with (he tube fitting nut.
