LOUISIANA CHEMICAL ASSOCIATION BACKGROUND ON PELAYO CORREA. M.D. Dr. Pelayo Correa is Professor of Pathology, Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans. He an internationally respected researcher and has assumed a leadership role in the Louisiana research community. He has been scientifically sound voice in the debate over Louisiana cancer causation. He believes that smoking and nutrition are major factors in Louisiana's cancer incidence. He serves as Chairman of the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund and is a board member of the Louisiana Cancer and Health Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors, National Cancer Institute, and is Louisiana Chairman of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study II. Dr. Correa asked and received LCA support to help the LSU Medical Center sponsor the International Lung Cancer Update Conference in March 1983, which was attended by the world's leading cancer researchers. Keynote speaker was renowned British researcher, Dr. Richard Peto. During 1983, Dr. Correa made himself available for consultation and critique of LCA's booklet, "Cancer, and Cancer Risk in Louisiana." His contribution assured the accuracy of the document. The credibility of this information played a pivotal role in `bringing the importance of lifestyle risks to the attention of policymakers. Dr. Correa and an LCA representative were appointed to the 1983 Governor's Task Force on Health nd the Environment.
