J OHNSON Plan t Manager April 5th, 1943 Dr. Robert Kehoe, Director Ketterling Laboratories, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Sir:- I am preparing the portion of the manuscript referring to "Lead" for a book on the Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, to be published by John Wiley and Sons. The work is designed to be used as a text book for technical schools, and as a reference on modern metallurgical practice. * , I believe that such a book should contain a short chapter ok the Subjects "Lead Absorption", or "The Physiological Effects of /- Lead", or some similar title. The book will be read by students ( and by metallurgists, superintendents and others in'the lead industry; and while this is an intelligent audience, the material should not be too technical from a medical standpoint. The purpose of the chapter would be to acquaint the reader with the fact that a hazard exists, that absorption is preventable and curable, and to give some practical ideas of the methods of protection, examination and treatment of workers as now employed in the industry. A good bibliography of references on the subject should be included. While we have had a considerable amount of experience at this plant with the problem of lead absorption in lead refining and white lead manufacture, I do not feel that I am qualified to write such a chapter, and would not undertake to do so; furthermore, I N22153 Dr. Robert Kehoe. -2- April 5th, 1943 believe that it would be better that it be made up largely of direct quotations from sane authoritative source.
