File XF: Interoffice Comm unication FROM: Tom Grumbles DATE: January 30, 1985 SUBJ: ASSOCIATED CHEMISTS ALLEGED ALFOL 20+ HEALTH AFFECTS I received a call, at approximately 4:15 p.m., from Ginny Haines of Associated Chemists regarding a problem with potential health effects from ALFOL 20+. She referred me to Doug Smalley a plant chemist. The problem was described as follows. The last load of 20+ they received had more odor than usual, even at room temperature. They process the material in what was described as an open-to-atmosphere vat at approximately 310F. While processing this last shipment, employees have complained of various health affects, including stiff necks, sinus congestion, and laryngitis. There are 3 or 4 employees involved. He is confident the effects are real. The odor levels in and around the plant are markedly different and in his opinion the odor is similar to lower range alcohols. They are taking steps to ventilate the process vessel to the outside but have not been able to test the systems effectiveness yet. It sounded at best to be an improvised system utilizing available equipment. He had been in contact with Joe Nigro and Mory Osborne regarding product performance problems in the last week. They ran some GC analysis but could not determine any significant product differences. Samples have been sent back to LCCP and Ponca City for our further analysis. He had an old MSDS for the product. A current sheet was sent today via Federal Express. I told him this type of problem was unusual with high molecular weight straight chain alcohols and we would look carefully at the samples for possible product contaminants. Joe Nigro is checking the history of the truck that carried the product. The plant and Ponca City will advise as to the analytical results. \ Thomas G. Grumbles ajo/006 vvv 000016026
