PROCEDURE FOR BULK DISPOSAL OF ASBESTOS IN DEMPSTER/DINO BOXES
1. Lay (4) lengths of rope across the dino box and (2) lengths of rope length ways and drape outside so that the rope can be used to tie
the contents down when it is filled. (See illustration for placing ropes and for lapping polyethylene sheeting on next page).
Note: Rope should be minimum 1/4 inch in diameter.
2. Lay a sheet of 6 mil polyethylene film in the dino, allowing the edges to drape over the edge. Roll the draped edges up so that the rolled film is at the edge of the dino. This will prevent tearing of the film when working around the dino. The polyethylene sheet can be purchased through M & S catalog #15-06130 in a 20 ft. width. A polyethylene dino box liner can be purchased through Environmental
Operations (phone 7415).
3. Lengths of wetted asbestos covered pipe can be lowered over the dino and the asbestos removed, allowing it to fall into the dino. Make sure the asbestos being taken off the pipe and the asbestos in the dino are sufficiently wetted so that no dust is created.
4. Transite and other concrete - containing asbestos waste must be placed into the container in such a way that the liner is not ripped
or punctured. If concrete - containing waste has been broken, it must be kept wetted sufficiently so that dust is not created.
5. If the dino is to be left for a long period of time (overnight or longer), unroll a single sheet of polyethylene film from an edge and
cover it - or cut another sheet of polyethylene and cover it.
6. Do not fill containers above the top of the sides.
7. When the dino is full, double cover the asbestos with polyethylene film from each side arxi tie the rope so that the contents are securely contained and covered during transport.
Note:
Tying polyethylene liners down with ropes is the minimum securement requirement. Any desired gluing or taping by generator for tighter sealing of package is optional. If
this is done the generator should write special procedures to prevent the need for personnel to walk on top of the load in dempster/dino boxes.
8. Tie-downs for dempster liners must not be attached to dino/dempster boxes.
9. All dempster/dino boxes used for asbestos waste packaging and transport, and all packages of asbestos waste (including dempster liners) must be labeled with an OSHA - approved label available through Environmental Operations (phone 7415).
