I To: R. T. Ferrell Interoffice Communication From: Date: Subject: J. G. Cole September 11, 1986 AFE Request - Improved Resin Silo Valves Aberdeen Chemical Plant Attached is an AFE request for $56,000 to install butterfly valves on sixteen resin silos to prevent resin leakage. The butterfly valve specified has been tested in the plant and proved reliable. The existing slide valves are Incapable of providing a leakproof seal. The leaking resin creates an environmental problem when it becomes air-borne. PVC resin leakage is a recurring problem at the resin silo loading area. Leaking resin is a source of lost revenue, causes resin build-up in the plant's ponds, and is an environmental problem when it becomes air-borne. When the silos are aerated for moisture content removal, PVC resin leaks out of the chute and onto the ground. The cause of the leaks from the existing valves is that the slide gate valves have a metal to metal seating surface, which gives a poor seal. Aeration will provide sufficient pressure to force PVC resin through the closed valve. Repeated valve mainte nance has been unable to stop the problem. The new butterfly valves have a rubber (EPDM) seat. The metal to rubber seating surface provides a much tighter seal. Two months of testing on silo 685 and seven months of testing on silo 691 have proved the new butterfly valve successful in stopping resin leaks. A recent inspection showed the valve to be in good condition after this service. No economics were calculated for this environmental project. J 6.
