Box 111 Colton, California Mr. Hayden: I an vriting you at the request of Jack Button, of E. S. Browning Company, our California distributor. Jack has asked me to send you data on "Asbestos/Health Hazzards" that has been bandied about in the last year or two. As you expect, we have collected an abundance of data over this period. I find it difficult to find any single article to point an accusative singular finger at asbestos no more than they could any of the other insoluble dusts that collect in the air we breath. We*ve been in the asbestos business since 1918 and can find no reported conditions of asbestosis or lung disease claims they have been trying to associate with asbestos. Under critical industrial concentrations of dust, asbestos is just as dangerous as mineral wool,.fibre glass, clays, talcs, etc., if proper precautionary measures are not taken. At our mill at East Broughton we have eight 100,000 cu. ft. fans used to lift the fibre and enclosed systems in which we move the product from one milling stage to another. At the packing machines where we bag the asbestos, the men use face masks or respirators even though the area is apparently dust free...as a precaution. Jack tells me your company policy requires that face masks be used in areas where common sense caution should be applied. Your finished product is a cement plastic slurry and should not cause any health hazzard condition. Therefore, California Portland Cement should have no concern regarding asbestos as a health hazzard as long? j as your good housekeeping rules are continued.
