Tiedeman National Sanitation Foundation Testing Laboratory School of Public Health Universtiy of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan Dear Mr. Tiedeman; Thank you for your letter of October 13, I can understand your reluctance to issue an opinion on the suitability of our KDA-2458 vinyl sheeting as a swimming pool liner in as much as the for mulation does differ in certain respects from the pipe material which was examined in the previous study. Since there is apparently no established procedure for approving swimming pool liners can we logically assume that an accelerated extraction study similar to those recommended by the Food & Drug Administration for food packaging materials would suffice in this other application? Perhaps a maximum film surface might be ex posed to a minimum volume of extractive solvents such as distilled water, a dilute acid, and a dilute alkali at an elevated temperature for several weeks or more and the residue than examined, in this case for extracted pigment and tin? In the event that such a procedure were considered adequate would you be willing to provide an opinion based upon evidence gathered in our laboratories as does the F. & D. A.-in food packaging work or would the entire study be conducted in your own facilities? Further, can you provide us with some indication as to the fee for the above consultation services?
