ACTIVATED SLUDGE RESPIRATION INHIBITION TEST
TEST SUBSTANCE
Identity:A mixturecontainingperfluorooctanesulfonatweh,ich may also be referredtoas PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FC-206CE. (1Octanesulfonicacid)(CAS # 2795-39-3).
Remarks: The 3M productionlotnumber was 502. The testsample isFC206CE. Currentinformatioinndicatesitisa mixtureof0.92% PFOS, 15% diethyleneglycolbutylether,76.09% water,4% urea,1.28% Sultonefoamer, 1.55% sodium octylsulfate1,.05% polyoxyethylenemonooctylphenylether, 0.06% sodium laurylsulfatea,nd 0.05% tolytriazolAen.tifoamerSWS 214 was added ata nominal concentrationof200 mg/L.
The followingsummary applies to a mixture with incompletely characterized concentrations of impurities.Data may not accurately reflectthe toxicityof the fluorochemkat component of the testsample.
METHOD
Method: OECD 209 Test type: Staticacute GLP: No Year Completed: 1990 Analyticalmonitoring: Dissolvedoxygen concentrationsp,H and temperature. Statisticamlethods: Resultswere determined by calculatioonfthe % inhibitioinn respiratiornate. Test organism source: Activatedsludge mixed liquorcollectedfrom the Metro Waste Treatment Plant,St.Paul,MN Test condition:
Dilutionwater: MilliporMeilli-QTwmater Synthetic sewage: per OECD method Reference and testsolution preparation: A stocksolutionofthe referencesubstance,3,5-dichlorophenolw,as prepared by dissolving 500 mg in1OmL 1N NAOH, dilutedto30mL withMilliporMeilli-'Q"A water, then brought tothe pointof incipienptrecipitatiownith1N H2SO4 and dilutedto 1L withMilli-Qiwramter. The pH ofthe referencesolution was measured tobe 7.2. Test substance was added directltyothe testvessels.AntifoamerSWS 214 was added tothe testvesslesat 200 mg/L from a stocksolutionprepared by dilutin2g000 mg ofSWS 214 in500 mL Milli_QTM water. The solutionsappeared misciblein water. Test vessels: Not given. Number of concentrations: threeplus 1 referencesubstance and 2 blank controls Temperature: 18 - 19 OC
Totalsuspended solidsand pH on day oftesting7:.853g/L(TSS), initipaHl 6.7 and finalpH 6.9. InitiTaSlS in1000 mg/L concentration was 3.16 g/L,initiaplH 6.7,finalpH 6.8,and MLSS 3.38. Element Basis: Respirationinhibitioans determined by oxygen consumption.
Remarks: Values correctedto20 OC forcalculations.
RESULTS
Nominal concentrations: 2 Blank controlsr,eferencesubstance,320, 560 and 1000 mg/L Element values: 30-minute EC5o = >1000 mg/L
3-hour EC5o = > 1000 mg/L
Element values based on nominal concentrations.
Remarks: There was minimal foaming inthe 1000 mg/L exposure concentrationwhen compared to FC-206CE withoutantifoamer.Testingwas conducted on a mixtureas describedintheTest Substance Remarks field. The values reportedapplytothatmixtureand notthe fluorochemical proportionalone.
CONCLUSIONS
The FC-206CE 3-hourEC50 foractivatedsludge respiratioinnhibitiownas determined tobe >1000 mg/L.

DATA QUALITY
Reliability:Klimischranking2. Testingmeets allcriterifaorqualitytesting. However, sample puritywas notproperlycharacterizedand thestudy lacks analyticaclonfirmationofthe amount offluorochemicalproportioninthe solution.
