Using traffic analogies, the narrator discusses the value of rules and how they help us anticipate trouble. The film then points out that we often ignore safety rules because of the attitudes developed when we were children. Through examples of youthful behavior (coupled with scenes of common, unsafe work practices), the film discusses the consequences of carelessness, ego grati fication, resistance to authority, and the belief that rules are made for the other guy. TITLE Refining Oil for Energy 16MM film library RECOMMENDED VIEWING Training & School Groups RUNNING TIME 20 Min. SYNOPSIS The mystery of how a model refinery converts crude oil into useful products is cleared up by means of animation to show how pipe furnaces and fractionation towers separate the raw material into component parts or fractions. Distillation is explained, and are the roles of heat and pressure in cracking big, complicated molecules into smaller, lighter more versatile molecules. One sequence explains the treatment given gasoline and motor oil to insure good performance. 2. Prospecting for Training and Petroleum School Groups 23 Min. Three-diminisional animation helps tell the history of the oil industry and describe the techniques used in the search for oil. It also helps explain the geologic theory of how oil was formed in the earth countless centuries ago and shows how the demand for oil has grown. Excellent sequences trace the progress of reservoirs from the early days of the "doodlegub" to today's scientific methods employing man-made earthquakes and' incredibly sensitive instruments. SYNOPSIS Drilling a "wildcat" a well sunk in unproved territory - is a venture filled with suspense. Live action shots show oil men building a derrick and drilling crews moving with splitsecond timing as they operate heavy equipment. Models show the technique of fishing when the drill pipe breaks and the use of the whipstock in bypassing the break. Animated sequences show how natural underground forces make oil flow and how pumps or special drives are used when natural forces slacken. 4. Oil The Invisible Training & Traveler School Groups 19 Min. The barrel, in which the early oil industry shipped all its crude and products is the ancestor of one of the greatest transportation systems ever developed. A barrel laid on its side and stretched out is a pipeline. A barrel on wheels becomes a truck or tank car. A barrel afloat becomes a tanker or barge. Live action and animated drawings tell bright, informative story about the growth of a system that now moves millions of barrels of oil a day. LAWI 030809 ABS-014004 INDEX NO. 5.
