Welch, Vice President FROM SUBJECT Saudi Arabia - Inquiry About Safety of A/C Pipe ACTION REQUIRED: Review for information Internal Correspondence December 11,1981 DATE On November 30, 1981, Karl Reiner (United States Department of Commerce) contacted the Corporate Marketing Services offices of Johns-Manville to obtain information about "tests" on A/C pipe for water distribution. At Don Stinson's request, Staff followed up with Reiner. He reDorted that the information request originated in a cable from the American Embassy in Saudi Arabia. Evidently, the Embassy received an inquiry from the Director General, Water and Sewage Authority, Western Region, Saudi Arabia. The Authority requested results of tests and findings about A/C pipe as a possible cancer hazard. The Authority also asked whether any U.S. standards regulated the use of A/C water pipe. Reiner indicated that He had spoken already to John Small of the National Bureau of Standards. Information on the safety of A/C was forwarded to Reiner on December 9,1981 (see Attachment).
