GAR SERVICE LETTER 1988 series 13* NOVEMBER No.74 EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS DURING THE SERVICING OF BRAKES A recent exercise was carried out by the Ford Motor Company Ltd., Medical Services on the above subject. The following is a passage drawn from the conclusion of the report on the exercise; "On the environmental and analytical evidence obtained it does not appear that a significant hazard to health should occur during brake drum 'blow-out' in a typical dealer passenger car repair shop". However, it is desirable that inhalation of dust during brake cleaning should be minimised. This could be done by wiping-out brake drums with a clean absorbent cloth free from oil or grease or a cloth lightly impregnated with carbon tetra-chloride (CTC) instead of using an air line to blow-out the drums. Similarly, care should be taken when blowing out the gearbox bellhousing or clutch disc.
