A/C Pipe Producers Association Public Affairs Committee Field Problem - Clearmont, Florida ACTION REQUIRED: Review for information Internal Correspondence February 11, 1982 DATE On February 2,1982, Elmer (Bud) Sampson of Springstead <5c Associates, Inc. (consulting engineers), P. O. Box 283, Leesburg, Florida, 32748, telephone 904/787-1414 called. The firm is overseeing the installation of approximately 70,000 feet of A/C water pipe in Clearmont. A concerned citizen obtained an article from the Wausau Daily Herald describing the removal of the A/C pipe system in Weston, Wisconsin. The citizen is asking why A/C pipe is being installed when it is being removed in Wisconsin for health reasons. Sampson requested information to respond to the citizen's contentions. The press kit, medical backgrounder, "A/C Pipe and Drinking Water" booklet and "Recommended Work Practices" were sent on February 2, 1982. Staff spoke with Sampson on February 3, 1982 and assured him that the industry would provide the support necessary to combat the problem. He indicated that the problem would be handled by him and Clearmont's City Manager until it became unmanageable. On February 8, 1982, Sampson called again to report that the citizen applied to the City Council to make a presentation protesting installation of A/C pipe. Citizen appearances must be approved by the City .Manager and in this case it was denied. Instead, Sampson has been directed to prepare for the City Manager a detailed letter responding to the citizen's concerns. The citizen threatened to contact local media if his questions were not addressed. Sampson determined that the individual apparently is an acquaintance of Richard Weber, attorney for the Town of Weston. Sampson requested additional information which is described in the enclosed correspondence. Approximately 45,000 of the 70,000 feet of A/C pipe already are in the ground. Hal Olson (J-M) was advised of this matter on February 8, 1982. Since the purchased pipe is of J-M manufacture, he will assume accountability for this field problem. JFW/ajb Enclosure cc: A.
