Liana Pete Petrunich Standards Representatives MOC Representatives ASBESTOS-CONTAINING GASKETS AND PACKINGS IN VALVES July 22, 1985 PLAINTIFFS ! EXHIBIT OC-1088 The purpose of this memorandum is to give requirements for valve gaskets and packings currently specified in UCC Standard Practice VM-100 to contain asbestos. (Please place this memorandum in the front of your Manual. It has been punched for this purpose.) Requirements regarding asbestos are as follows: 1. Where asbestos is specified in VM-100 it shall be furnished if available. 2.- Materials generally classified as "non-asbestos" must not be substituted for asbestos. (These are the materials being adver tised as replacements for asbestos in compressed gaskets, as the filler in spiralwound gaskets, and as packings.) TM 3. If asbestos is unavailable, Grafoil may be substituted for it as applicable without prior specific approval by Union Carbide. (Possible substitutions are plain and metal-inserted gaskets, the filler in spiralwound gaskets, and packing. When GrafoilTM I packing is supplied, graphite-filament anti-extrusion rings shall be used as needed to eliminate the possibility of extruding the GrafoilTM from the stuffing box.) In some instances. TeflonTM may be an acceptable substitute for asbestos. Refer such possible substitutions to UCC Engineering and Technology Services Division ( Piping Technology for approval before making the substitution.
