I ASBESTOS PAPER & MILLBOARD
a) Asbestos Latex Gasketing - Samples of product GN-704 have been submitted to McCord, Felt Products Co. and Detroit Gasketing. McCord and Detroit requested prices before evaluating the product. Felt Products Co. evaluated the product without prices. Felt Products approved the samples submitted and considered them equal to Accopac AN-859* They have now requested prices. Erie manufacturing is going to prepare up to date cost estimates for this product in three thicknesses and submit to marketing. Marketing will then prepare and submit prices to the customers.
Marketing will attempt to obtain some trial orders from Felt Products. With or without the trial orders, another run will be made at Erie in order to obtain samples at .032", .043" and .062". At this time the ability to run a sheet as thick as .062" will be investigated.
Samples of laboratory densified GN-704-D are available for customer evaluation. Marketing will attempt to get some customer evaluation of this product realizing we are not currently in a position to manu facture to the high density. Marketing will request samples from Research when they have an outlet. Marketing will attempt to get samples of Nicolets low density match for (24-704 for Research evalu ation.
It was agreed that we should be actively purcuing the rest of Accopac products that are within our potential capability. These include a total of six products (three different rubber latices each at 70 and 85 lbs./ft.-' density). Research will attempt to develop the two remaining latex formulations.
In order to pursue the densifying approach, the laboratory calander is needed. Research and Engineering have decided the type of calender required and have quotations. The calander needed will cost approxi mate?'/ $30,000. An AFE will be prepared requesting approval to pur chase the calander. This unit will provide a means of developing the high density asbestos formulations and provide engineering and manu facturing information leading to the design of a production sized cslandering unit.

b) High Temperature Millboard - Lehr Discs -
Research is actively working on the development of a high temperature product. The work with anthophyllite asbestos has been hampered . by availability of samples.
Purchasing will be asked to look into this problem. Laboratory work is being centered around a blue asbestos formulation.
PPG has approved our low temperature disc, but would like us to have both high and low temperature products before they consider us an approved source. LOF and Corning are being supplied quotations on the low temperature disc. Erie manufacturing will put enough finished material in stock to cut 10,000 discs. This will allow for quickly filling trial orders.
c) H. H, Robertson - Test rolls were made for Robertson using 1/2 the level of organic fibres and binder. These rolls were shipped. There is some confusion regarding whether or not the rolls were evaluated or the maimer in which they were evaluated. Marketing will have the salesman investigate and advise Erie. This will be done before the next run which will be made in the week of 6/2/69. run
d) Asbestos Paper for Cooling Towers - A research testais planned for the week of 5/26/69 at Erie attempting to make a paper which meets Marley's requirements. If successful, test rolls will be shipped and a research man will go to Harley to see the rolls run. A second potential customer (Munters Co.) has been found in Florida.
e) Low Organic Commeriial asbestos Paper - GaF Commercial Asbestos paper contains 7 1/2 - 8# organic. J-M has a maximum of 5# in their liter ature and samples tested are in the 3-4# range. Manufacturing agreed to lower the level of our product to 5-4# with the understanding that it might be necessary to run as high as 5# on products weighing under 10 lbs./lOO ft.
f) Asbestos Rollboard - Our rollboard product is three plys of asbestos, paper laminated with sodium silicate. The J-M product is two plys. Our product is reported to be too stiff and heavy. Erie manufacturing and research are working to make our product comparable to J-M's product.

g) Asbestos Flooring Felts - A new set of samples has recently been submitted to Mannington Mills. National Floors still reports a problem with bowing of our floor felt when the rolls are unwound. This is after Erie made special rolls and checked them for bowing before shipment and found them to be well within desired limits. We need a joint inspection of a "bowed" roll of felt by National Floors people and our manufacturing people. The customer will not allow anyone from GAF in their plant. Marketing will attempt to arrange for a National Floors representative to come to Erie to discuss the problem and inspect some rolls.
h) Proctor Silex and G. E. Millboard - G. E. has been quoted on a medium density Millboard product which meets their requirements. Engineering has developed a means of cutting the product. Marketing will pursue. Proctor Silex still has not given final approval of our product. This is the high volume customer. Marketing will pursue.
i) Homasote Company - The paper developed for Marley cooling towers will be submitted to Homasote for their application.
INSULATION AND CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS
a) Pipe Line Felt - Manufacturing proposed that, in order to properly revamp the facilities for manufacturing pipe line felt, a new satur ator and a new or modified slitter were necessary. They estimated that this would cost between 8110,000 and 8125,000. This would allow the manufacture of a competitively priced product at a good gross profit. It was further felt that major steps like the above were necessary to capture a fair share of the market. There was a general lack of interest in limping along with our present product and process line. It was agreed that, "We must commit ourselves to get into this business on a competitive basis or discontinue the pipe line felt product line". Manufacturing will prepare a complete report on what is needed to revamp the manufacturing facilities. Marketing will have to justify the expenditure. Management will then be in a position to make a decision on the subject.

b) Industrial Insulation Line
1) Inhibited Calsilite - The research effort to date to develop a lower cost inhibited formulation has been unsuccessful. There is evidence that a recent change in lime: silica ratio of the standard inhibited formulation has resulted in a 10% reduction in density compared to the standard Calsilite formulation. Continued experience is needed to confirm this trend. If this pattern continues, the change over to 100% Calsilite SS could be made without any significant cost increase.
2) Extended Leg Pipe Covering
Project was held up because of an economic justification. The problem has been overcome and the AFE can now be processed.
3) 36" Calsilite Block - Manufacturing will order cartons that will accomodate 18", 24", 30" and 36" block. Marketing will forecast the quantities needed.
4) Dustless Calsilite - No progress to report. This is a longer range program and no simple solution is expected.
5) P.L. Label for T/NA 100 - Currently the U. L. label is not being applied on T/NA 100 because the product fails the small scale U. L. test and the inspector required the removal of the label. An experimental fire test will be run at the Underwriters laboratory. If successful, the label can be reinstated. If not successful, the label will be left off until the fire test failures are over come.
c) Johns-Manville Marinite
Marketing was interested in whether Asbestos Cement Corrugated could be used in some applications where Marinite is specified. It was felt that structuredly it could be used but corrugated would not have the thermal insulation properties of Marinite. Research described Marinite as an asbestos cement board made in three densities by the addition of diatomaceous earth. It is manufactured in a filter press operation, autoclaved and dried. It is sanded and cut to a very accurate degree. Manufactured by J-M at Nassau, N. H.

d) Corrugated Asbestos Cement Sheets
1) Painted Corrugated - The development of painted corrugated is contingent on the development of painted asbestos cement panels at St. Louis. The painted flat sheet is not yet in production.
The next meeting time and date will be announced at a later date.
