a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty on a very broad category of parts which the EPA has defined as emission parts. These include all of the igni tion parts, all of the carburetion
parts, all of the emission control parts and all of the exhaust parts, in addition to many associated parts such as ignition wires, pul leys, belts and certain hoses. In ad dition, the EPA is constantly ad ding to this already extensive list of parts; just check the emissions warranty section on any new car warranty booklet beginning with the 1981 model year, which is when the 5 year/50,000 mile war ranty becomes effective.
The warranty is triggered by a failure of the car owner's car to meet an EPA specified emissions test. Although the annual emis sions inspection has not yet been enacted in most states, the EPA has very broad powers to force the enforcement of this test. Any car failing this test will go back to the car dealer for warranty repair work during the entire 5 year/50,000 mile time period. It can be expected that while the car is in the automobile dealer's place of business, various other work nofunder emissions war ranty -- such as oil filter changes, etc. -- will likely be sold as well.
A 5 year/50,000 mile warranty period is too long and will cause great economic harm to the in dependent aftermarket. Therefore, we urge your involvement and sup port in contacting your Congress man and/or Senator and request ing his support in getting the Clean Air Act amended to reduce the 5 year/50,000 milewarrantyto2years /24.000 miles for emissions parts.
