Safety
1. There were no lost-time accidents during the year. There were 275 first aid cases, down from 390 the previous year.
2. Off-the-job safety was not good. There were 78 lost-time in juries, up from 54 in 1972.
3. Training programs worthy of special mention were:
a. First-Aid Lifesaving, off the job. b. STOP refresher course for supervisors (2863 safety obser
vation cards were turned in during the year). c. Safety portion of Operator Training. d. Hearing Conservation Training. e. First Aid Course. f. Evacuation Training. g. Respiratory Equipment Training. h. Orientation for all new employees.
4. Significant promotional activities w-ere:
a. Safety Slogan program. b. Urinagrams -- Safety messages above urinals. c. Six month Safety Prize program.
5. The Employee's Safety Manual was revised to include OSHA re gulations .
6. Safety Awards:
a. February' 28, 1973,6 months and 1,118,254 hours with no LTA. b. March 1973, Service Department completed one million manhours. c. May 12, 1973, Corporate Executive Safety Award. d-. August 28, 1972, 12 months and 2,244,752 hours with no LTA. e. November 50, 1973, Power Department 16 years since their
last LTA. f. December 1973, Service Department set new record of 1,512,904
hours without LTA.
Medical
1. A new heme visitation program was established and one registered nurse was added to the medical staff.
2. Much attention was given and specific programs outlined for the purpose of safeguarding employee health. Special emphasis was placed on mercury', lead, asbestos, noise and all organic chemicals including vinyl chloride monomer. The plant doctor was very' active in these areas along with plant personnel.
3. First-Aid Dispensary activity was heavy with 4,600 dispensaryvisits, 237 injections, 1,241 physicals, 3,146 laboratory' analyses and 58 home visits. Total 'workmens Compensation payments was $43,838.

Plant Security
1. A program to revise the lock and key system was begun. 2. New parking lot policy was established and lots were
expanded. 3. Plant gate system was studied and additional security gates
were added to accommodate construction personnel.
Fire Protection
1. Fire extinguishers were brought up to OSHA compliance standards.
2. A Guard-Fireman was assigned full time to inspect and service fire protection equipment.
3. A new pumper firetruck was ordered to bring industrial fire fighting needs up to date.
4. The Emergency Squad was reorganized and trained under the new Fire Chief to provide a more effective unit. Current first aid and fire fighting techniques were emphasized.
5. A Mutual Aid drill was conducted at the Lake Charles plant. PPG provided heavy participation in area mutual aid.
Training
1. Activities in training and management and- skills development were heavily emphasized in 1973. Some of the major training programs included:
a. Supervisors Counseling and merit rating training. b. Public Speaking (part of Speakers Bureau development). c. New labor contract review. d. Equal Employment Opportunity Review for exempt personnel. e. Self Improvement --a self study tape cassette library. f. "Share It," an internal extension of out-of-plant courses
and seminars. g. S.T.O.P. refresher safety course. h. Noise Abatement and Protection. i. Artificial Resuscitation. j. Operator Training, Phase I and Phase II. k. Apprenticeship Individual Training. l. Maintenance Training courses included buffer and grinder,
fork lift, portable air compressors, aluminum welding, magnafiux equipment, coupling allignment, drill sharpening, taylor instruments, balancing rotational equipment and safe handling methods for yard crewmen. m. Clerical Training (three sessions). n. Salaried Benefits. o. Remedial Math and Language Skills.
